Former Newport Mayor Stephen Waluk said it is important for Aquidneck Island to have a voice on the RITBA board.
The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority board voted Wednesday to re-elect David Darlington, of North Kingstown, as chairman and former Newport Mayor Stephen Waluk as vice chairman. Waluk was first appointed to the RITBA board by Governor Carcieri in 2005 and was recently reappointed by Governor Chafee for another four year term. "I am happy to be re-elected as Vice Chair of the RITBA," said Waluk. "It is important that Newport and Aquidneck Island have a voice on this board." Last year, Rhode Island's General Assembly approved to move two additional bridges into RIBTA's jurisdiction and install tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge to fund the maintenance. "It is also a wonderful day for the generations of future Rhode Islanders who may never know a time when some …

Senator Christopher Ottiano (Dist. 11, Portsmouth and Bristol) has withdrawn his bill, which would create a "Prudence Island Ferry Authority" to help resolve the problem of ferry service for Prudence Island residents. While Ottiano's Senate bill 532 has been withdrawn, an identical House bill, H-5600, sponsored by Reps. Raymond Gallison, John G. Edwards, Dennis Canario and Kenneth Marshall, has been referred to the House Finance Committee. The bill, if approved, would create a quasi-governmental body with members of Portsmouth and Bristol governments. The authority would determine the course of action to resolve Prudence Island's current ferry problem. As of Dec. 1, ferry services between Bristol's mainland and Prudence Island, a part…

Noting that more than 45,000 Rhode Island college graduates would face higher costs because of a scheduled doubling of the interest rate on student loans, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed on May 1 told current students at Roger Williams University that he is working to avoid the hike. "They rely upon this need-based financial aid in order to make it through school, and we are at a moment in history where we need all the talent and all the educated men and women that we can muster," Reed said in a speech at the Global Heritage Hall Atrium just before noon. "The reality is that, students today are graduating with tremendous debt. It's not only affecting us from an educational standpoint, but from a macroeconomic standpoint." Reed explained that he is …
