Newport Hospital was established in 1873 as a 12-bed cottage hospital. Now the medical center is part of the Lifespan system and offers a wide-range of advanced services for area residents including emergency care, diagnostic imaging, a birthing center, behavioral health unit, comprehensive surgical services, intensive care, acute inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. As of 2008, the hospital had 981 employees and 286 affiliated physicians.
