Poll: Who Would You Vote For in the N.H. Republican Primary?

While politically inclined RI residents can't vote in Tuesday's N.H. Republican primary, here at Patch, we don't think it's right that our friends up north have all the January fun. We want to know: who would you vote for?

While politically inclined RI residents can't vote in Tuesday's N.H. Republican primary, here at Patch, we don't think it's right that our friends up north have all the January fun. We want to know: who would you vote for? The Republican race for a presidential candidate is heating up. The New Hampshire primary is under way and the caucus in Iowa slimmed down the potential Presidential nominations with Michele Bachmann dropping out the race after getting just 5 percent of the vote (6,073 ballots). Mitt Romney took the caucus with a needle-thin win over Rick Santorum, gathering just eight more ballots. Romney had 24.6 percent of the vote (30,015 ballots) with Santorum in a surprising second with 24.5 percent (30,007 ballots). Both Newt …

Voters Elect Terri Cortvriend As Water Commissioner

More than 600 voters cast their ballot for the town's next water commissioner in Wednesday's election.

More than 600 voters turned out for Wednesday's Portsmouth Water and Fire District election, choosing Terri-Denise Cortvriend as the district's next water commissioner. Cortvriend was the sole name listed on the ballot in Wednesday's election for water commissioner. However, two other Portsmouth residents, former Town Council President Peter McIntyre and Allen Shers, ran on write-in campaigns.  The votes cast for commissioner were 410 for Cortvriend, 93 for McIntyre and 53 for Shers. "It's what the public wanted. Everyone ran a good race," said McIntyre following the reading of results. "It's hard being a write-in." The commissioner will serve a three-year term on the seven-member Administrative Board.  Incumbent Philip T. Driscoll was …

Don't Forget to Vote Today for Water Commissioner!

Three Portsmouth residents are hoping to be elected Water Commissioner this Wednesday.

Three Portsmouth residents are hoping to "wash out" the competition in votes this Wednesday for the position of Water Commissioner. Registered voters residing in the Portsmouth Water and Fire District will elect one clerk and one water commissioner today for a three-year term to the seven member Administrative Board.  Incumbent Philip T. Driscoll of 169 Immokolee Drive and James E. Hall of 45 Lehigh Terrace are running for the clerk’s seat.  Terri-Denise Cortvriend of 46 Mary Lane is running for water commissioner. Two other candidates, former Town Council President Peter McIntyre, and Allen Shers, are running as write-in candidates for water commissioner. "It's another way to give back to the community," McIntyre said when asked why he …

College Republicans Fete Robitaille, Ottiano

Fundraiser brings former gubernatorial candidate to Bristol along with GOP General Assembly freshmen.

A good crowd turned out at the Elks Club in Bristol on Thursday night for a reception celebrating local Republican candidates. A fundraiser for the Roger Williams University College Republicans, the event drew John Robitaille, who narrowly lost the gubernatorial race earlier this month, as well as RI Senator-elect Chris Ottiano and Representatives-elect Dan Gordon and Dan Reilly. The 2010 Republican "tsunami" that delivered the U.S. House of Representatives to the Republicans and nearly leveled the balance of power in the U.S. Senate largely missed Rhode Island at the statewide level. At the local level Republicans made modest gains, going from six House seats in the last session to ten, and from four Senate seats to eight. Still, with 75…

Well, that seals it. Through insulting kids, self-compliments, and generally tarnishing the brand of the Marine Corps, you have shown your real personality (under various aliases, or course). Threatening jail time and leveraging your new elected position to enlist the Attorney General (I know you put A.G. because you can't spell it) is your new initiative? One can only hope that one of the …   more ›

Dist. 71 Candidate Requests Recount in House Race

The recount should not postpone certification of votes for local races, said the town clerk Monday night.

One local House of Representatives' candidate has requested a recount of votes from last Tuesday's election.  George S. Alzaibak, the Democrat candidate for House seat, District 71, has requested a recount of votes, his wife confirmed Monday evening by telephone.  Alzaibak lost in the House race against Republican candidate Daniel P. Gordon Jr. The vote was 2,705 or 50.5% of the vote for Gordon, while Alzaibak received 2,654 or 49.5% of the vote. Sticks and stones Mr. McGrath. Why are you verbally assaulting someone else now? The Marine lover now thinks he's a verbal Marine? I must say... you ARE entertaining. Seems that you are very concerned about people's identities and genders here. One might remind you that this is not a dating site. Who cares about that stuff? Go ahead, throw a few more posts up. I can use the laugh. Good day sir.   more ›

By the Numbers: A Look at How Each Precinct Voted in the General Election

Patch takes a look at how each precinct voted in the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

Each of the town's 11 precincts voted very differently in Tuesday's General Election. Directly below is a chart breaking down the numbers precinct-by-precinct, race-by-race. This information can also be found in paper form at Town Hall and online on the Board of Elections' Web site here.

Photos: A Look Back at Election 2010

Here's a look back at election '10 seen through the eye of a photo lens.

Election 2010 yielded some surprising results in the town of Portsmouth.  Voters chose to elect five Republicans and only two Democrats to the Town Council. Voters also rallied behind Republican candidates for School Committee.  Through the victories and letdowns after the results were shown, Patch was there with the photo lens capturing each moment. Below are the photographed highlights from Tuesday's General Election.

Recap: Election Night Yields Big Wins for PCC Endorsed Candidates

Voters chose to elect many of the candidates chosen by the Portsmouth Concerned Citizens in Tuesday's election, while an incumbent lost a re-election bid to the Town Council.

When Tuesday's election results started to pour in at the Portuguese-American Club on Power Street, a worrying frown began to show on many of the Democratic candidates' faces. The news and numbers were not in their favor. Murmured phrases of "this is crazy" and "this is not good" could be heard among the crowd of relatives, friends and candidates gathered in the club. Both Town Council candidates Jim Seveney and Dennis Canario hushed the crowd as they listened on cell phones to the results. They sat before a laptop, typing the results from each precinct into the computer, which fed the results to a projector and, finally, onto a white sheet hung on the wall. As the results were read, it was soon learned that Portsmouth voters had chosen to…
