Felines, cats, kittens. No matter how you say it, the animal of the month at the Potter League for Animals is definitely the cat. Despite having adopted out 46 cats in the month of August, there are still 118 cats in the care of the shelter. They have even had to open more rooms to house the cats and display them to the public. If you’re thinking of adding a kitty to your home, now is a great time to visit the Potter League and see the wide variety of cats and kittens they have available for adoption. And check out the attached slideshow to view come of these cuties. Of course, if you favor …
A busy summer continues There has been no summer vacation at the Potter League for Animals. The animal shelter has been bustling with adoptions, new incoming animals, reconnections between lost pets and their owners, and some exciting upcoming events. What's more, the Potter League still has a full house of animals in their care. Even after 125 animals found new homes last month alone, the shelter still has 106 cats, 22 dogs, and 10 other small animals in their care. That's before they receive a transport of another 20 dogs from North Carolina in the coming week. These animals need homes The …
The heat is on! Summer’s hot temperatures make for great beach going and ice cream eating, and we all know that it also means sunscreen and lots of water to keep ourselves safe and hydrated, but what about our pets? The heat can take quite a toll on our four legged friends as well. We checked in with the Potter League to find out what steps pet owners need to take to ensure their safety on these hot summer days and what signs to take note of if your pet’s in danger. Just like their human owners, pets need extra water when it’s hot and should never be left in hot cars. If it’s too hot for you…
"Adopt a Shelter Cat Month" at the Potter League for Animals in Middletown was a huge success in June, despite falling slightly short of its goal to get 75 cats adopted. The shelter paired 68 cats with new homes as well as 24 dogs, 12 small mammals, and 4 birds last month. Unfortunately, there are still 70 homeless cats, 36 dogs, and 9 other animals still looking for new homes. The good news is that if you haven’t yet found the perfect pet for you, there are lots of new faces at the shelter that might be “the one.” New Arrivals Twenty-nine new southern dogs arrived via Cloud Nine last week …
Before new spring litters arrive this summer, the Potter League for Animals is launching a big push to find new homes for cats of all ages. The goal is to adopt out 75 cats in June as part of its "Adopt a Shelter Cat" campaign this month. After a busy month of May in which the Potter League found new homes for 25 cats, 44 dogs, and 7 other small animals, earlier this week there remained 78 cats, 19 dogs, 14 small animals (including rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, and guinea pigs), and five birds in need of good, loving homes. To get to know some of these adoption-ready cats, check out the …
It’s always nice to think that we all have enough common sense to keep our pets safe during winter storms and cold weather, but it never hurts to have a refresher course from the experts. We asked Middletown's Pat Heller, Director of Development and Outreach at the Potter League for Animals, to tell us what is takes to keep our pets safe through the winter, whether in a snowstorm or freezing temperatures. “If it is too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pet,” said Heller. “Certainly when the wind chill or temperatures start to dip into the teens, single digits or below zero, extreme …
Nearly everyone has seen those adorable commercials and catalogs with tiny puppies poking their heads from big red boxes to surprise the person on the receiving end. This idyllic scene may be tempting to re-create during the holidays, but it may not be the best decision. Getting a pet is a very personal decision, warns local animal advocates and rescue experts from the Potter League for Animals, where they've seen many unwanted or discarded pets that started out as gifts and fell into the shelter system for a variety of reasons. For starters, many people have preferences for certain types of …
The joy of the season is abundant over at the Potter League for Animals. In addition to all the sparkling jewelry that's on sale as part of the non-profit's Critter Glitter sale to benefit the animals, recently, 24 cats, 8 dogs and 3 other small animals were adopted to new homes. But, of course, there are still a lot more loving animals looking for new families. One dog looking for a new home is Kala, a six-year -old Chesapeake Bay retriever mix. Kala arrived at the Potter League last week and is looking for a home with adults because she isn't too fond of sharing her toys. She also has a…
Twenty-one dogs rescued from a North Carolina shelter recently made the long road trip north and safely arrived at the Potter League for Animals, where the non-profit organization hopes to continue matching up the southern dogs with new homes and families throughout Aquidneck Island and New England. As part of a four-year-old transport partnership with its North Carolina sister shelter, the Mitchell County Humane Rescue, the Potter League has reportedly rescued more than 750 dogs from out-of-state shelters like Mitchell County, as a way to help ease the burden of overcrowded shelters down …
