Your Next Car: What's It Going to Be?

I'm hoping to drive my old beater into the ground before we need to get another car, but I'm on the lookout. What's your next car going to be?

My wife and I drive a perfectly good 2002 Nissan Sentra with 127,318 miles on it. "Stella" has four wheels and gets us from Point A to Point B. We've reached the stage in the life of the car where we don't repair body damage (as you can tell from the accompanying photo). I'm ashamed for my Dad to see it. But hey, it's paid for. Even though I'd love to get 200K miles out of Stella, she has some mechanical problems, like a seized bolt that has left the transmission fluid unchangeable for about eight years. She could conk out any old day. So we've been on the lookout for our next car. I'm paying attention to car commercials, asking friends about their cars. You know the feeling. We're looking for something that gets good gas mileage, and is …

East Bay Businesses Feel Isolated By Tolls

Seasonal businesses across the East Bay speak out against tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge.

Seasonal business owners in the East Bay are worried that a toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge could alienate their already inconstant business. In a business that is largely motivated by weather, business owners at Tiverton and Portsmouth's popular summer-time eateries agreed that a toll would be a deterrent to customers. "The sales tax dollars from small businesses over here help the whole state and I can't imagine we're going to end up making more by adding this toll," said Domenic Bitto, who owns the Tiverton seafood shack Evelyn's Drive-In with his wife. Bitto, like other business owners in the region attended hearings with the state Department of Transportation in protest to a Sakonnet River Bridge toll. "We get a lot of people who …

I am part of something: the human race. Something you seem to hate. Another addiction, perhaps? My credibility is just fine, thank you. Unlike yours. "Project boyfriends" in college? He never needed my help. Successful in his own right, unlike other people. I just don't want tolls, and truly believe our local economy will suffer greatly. Your opinions of me really don't matter.   more ›

Portsmouth Education Foundation Turns Wine and Cheese Into Dollars for Schools

The seventh annual Portsmouth Education Foundation Hidden Kitchens Tour raised money for public schools and gave donors a satisfying day out.

The Portsmouth Public Education Foundation cooked up big money for local public schools at its seventh annual Hidden Kitchens Tour on Friday. Gleaming granite counter tops and gourmet appliances in a waterfront model home off of Bristol Ferry Road were brought to life by the artisan cheeses and savory wines of two local vendors in one of the seven kitchens on the tour on Friday afternoon.  "The kitchen tours have been very successful and this year even more so," said education foundation President Marilyn Brockway. "I think it's a different kind of think to do and it's something you can do with friends," added Brockway. "We like to do it around Mother's Day so men and women can come with their mothers but this year we've also had a lot of …

Portsmouth Restaurant to Defend Chowder Champion Title

Melville Grille in Portsmouth, which earned “Best Seafood” bragging rights all year, will bring back with its Portuguese Fish Chowder recipe to this year's competition.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” That’s the mindset that two of last year’s defending champions are taking as they prepare for this year’s 32nd Annual Polar Seltzer Great Chowder Cook-Off. The competition will take place Saturday, June 1, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Newport Yachting Center in Newport. The Melville Grille in Portsmouth earned “Best Seafood” bragging rights all year. The Melville Grille will be back with its Portuguese Fish Chowder recipe again this year.  They might need all the help they can get as a number of newcomers are hoping to heat up the competition.  “We’re bringing the same award-winning Portuguese Fish Chowder as well as the same intensity level, team spirit, crew and booth design that won us the title last …
