Start by getting rid of these survey's. Keep the pot stores out of Portsmouth. Reduce the amount of tattoo and chinese restaurants. Get rid of the dump. Put more $ to Sandy Point beaches. Repair the roads. Repair the schools.

Well lets not get rid of all of them, Only the "low class" ones that East Side so strongly argues.
East side wants the tattoo and chinese food establishment's closed why ? Because they are not in his high standers of living ? Lets waste money into the Sandy Point beach because I would love to see the "Low Class" from Fall River take it over. LMAO Great Ideas East side. Keep them coming . You truly are an interesting individual.

I think maybe he has a grudge against chinese people with tattoos that smoke pot that hang out at the dump but do not like to swim in the Sakonnet River. HA

Porsmouth was a great place to grow up in the 1960's When Mr Sherman was the town clerk, Mr Hill was the building inspector, Mr Wilkey was fire chief, taxes were low when this was a small town before all the development came. There is no going back now, its a lost cause and its all about money and how much more can they get from the taxpayers every year. We are paying at least 4 retired police chiefs and I forget how many fire chiefs. More money-more money!

Every place was a great place to live in the 60's. However... times change and that is just the way it is. If you keep trying to live in and long for the past you will never enjoy the future.

The future in Portsmouth is higher taxes every year. A lot of tax dollars are wasted on surveys, attorney fees, studies etc. I'm not living in the past. But would like it if taxes would stay affordable or maybe even go down a little for maybe just a few years...What I was saying is that the people that ran the town long ago were more for the people AKA taxpayers...now it is has gotten out of control. A lot of people who were born and raised here for generations are getting squeezed out.

Continue to help businesses start up and prosper. Good jobs create opportunity and help keep families together. Seems every year we see the kids graduate and they have to leave the area to find work. Working together to shed the NIMBY. attitude and anti business climate the area has should be priority.
The State Legislature over the years has caused a lot of the problem. High taxes and over the top regulations have chased businesses out of the state. We need to push our Rep's harder to remedy the problem..

Create a retail area on West Main Road to generate more taxes for the town and reduce property taxes for home owners. Cut pensions for retired town workers and make future town workers retire with social security, like the rest of us.

Mike,
That's not going to happen here. Remember "Target" tried this and we actually passed ordinances to stop them. Everything in Portsmouth is "NIMBY". By the way, the same people who stopped Target are the ones who were pushing for Town Center, and I believe they still are despite overwhelming resident opposition.

Big box stores are a no no in Portsmouth. try again...
Also, Sandy Point beach is awesome and is a great place to bring the family. It's amazing what people will strap on to as I have no affiliation with Sandy Point, except for the beach.

Mike, those future town workers will most likely not have the "Social Security" that we now enjoy...But, I guess that is O K for them to pay for you and I right ?

Wendy, people in Portsmouth love to pay high taxes, thats why they shun businesses away.

The town council as well as folks in the Jepson lane and Union Street area. they didn't want a Target to be developed so they had the town council put in rules not to have big box stores. Shameful!!!
However, chinese restaurants and tattoo businesses are just fine.

East side the people who support a larger commercial tax base need to be more vocal. Support your EDC with the numbers needed to change the ordinance. The area around the compactor where rt. 24 meets West main rd. would be a perfect area for more retail. It has the traffic to support it.

Joe - this is what the EDC should be doing. they have the committee and voices. however, this committee is made up of folks that have businesses in our community not in the area you suggest. Therefore, there is a conflict of interest. In order for the EDC to be effective, this committee needs to be recreated.

Joe please keep your mental midgetry restricted to the pages where you live. We know about all about you here in Portsmouth and would like you to keep your comments away from our town. It seems that we have enough rif raf without you drifting across the river to pollute our town.

Stanley,
Please review the first amendment indeed. Tomas has every RIGHT to ask Joe to not comment. He even said please. He is in no way restrictiing his rights. He has no control over the blog, he is not flagging his comments, etc. He is making a request - I guess you folks only reserve these rights for those you agree with?

It simple. Change out the establishment that has been running Portsmouth for the past decade or so, and get some responsible, smart people who know how to think for the people. Raising taxes only means one thing? There is unecessary spending going on. Million dollar sports complexes at the high school and a God awful eye sore that is a wind turbine are just some of the top shelf items that get wasted with tax payers money. Renegotiate contracts with the town retirement packages. You can imagine that Portsmouth was once a rural farming community. With the amount of development in the town over the past two plus decades, you would figure that there would be plenty of tax dollars available? Keep it simple stupid (K.I.S.S.)!!
J. Lane McMahon
4:00 pm on Tuesday, December 20, 2011
ralph,
The high school needed the new gym, we had no choice there. And the turbine is actually profitable for the town, so I do not see how you can call that a waste of taxpayers money.
The retirement packages you speak of: We can only change the new ones, we are still on the hook for those that have already retired.
When you talk of the old days and how much growth we have had, I have to wonder if you understand that residental development actually costs us money...it generates a net loss on the budget...What we need is commercial and lt. industrial development.

I appreciate the constructive comments made by some on this blog item, but I don't consider it constructive to make personal attacks against individuals who have something to say. One of the real issues that we have in Portsmouth is a lack of civility in our discussions - its OK to disagree on substance but please refrain from attacking people simply because you may disagree with them.
Thanks
Joe Sousa.

East side a petition signed by citizens requesting an expansion of the commercial tax base would be a good start. If enough people show an interest the council will take notice. It all starts with an effort of one person who is determined to change the way business is done. Driving to Fall River to shop doesn't help RI. or the town .

How about installing sidewalks where there are none? Such as much of West Main Road? We also need sidewalks on sections of East Main Road...and Boyd's Lane up to Bristol Ferry Rd., and Anthony Rd.. It would also be good for the town to invest more in keeping up our public property. Has anyone been to Island Park beach lately? All the money put into fixing up the sidewalks, and adding those nice street lamps and benches, and it's FILTHY! There's seagull guano and sand all over the sidewalks; can't we clean the sidewalks and beach? And please don't take this as a knock on our fine town workers; it's a matter of the council allocating the funds and resources to get it done. Portsmouth can use some improvement, but overall it's a great place to live, and we should thank God for being fortunate enough to reside in one of our state's best towns.
