Time for Sandy Preparations
Things to do now in Preparation for Hurricane Sandy (with thanks and credits to Mike Cullen’s excellent blog post on KnowingNewport@yahoogroups.com):
-- Download and read the Portsmouth Hurricane Brochure
-- Read the federal hurricane checklist at http://www.ready.gov/hurricanes
-- Keep these Portsmouth phone #s handy: Fire 683-1200 and Police
683-0300 . Yes, 911 service can be get disrupted.
-- If you have a neighbor or friend with special needs, help them
signed up through the state system at https://health.ri.gov/emregistry.
This info gets shared with the Portsmouth FD.
-- Register your cellphone # with CodeRed so you get city CodeRed
messages should your cable/phone service die.
-- Find a way to recharge your cell phone ... perhaps it's through a
neighbor with a generator ... or a 12 volt recharge cable that you can
get at any cellphone store.
-- Gas up the car(s) and get the obligatory milk and bread (and drinking water).
-- Make sure that you have new batteries for your battery powered radios and flashlights
-- Think through what you will do if power is out for more than a few hours.
