Katy just began the next phase of her treatment — radiation. This weekend concluded a much-needed three week break, during which Katy rested, played with Cameron, celebrated her four-year wedding anniversary with Dustin, and got a small taste of "normal" life. She even got out to a drive-in movie. Katy made a lot of great progress during her break. She regained some balance and movement that's been lacking ever since her two surgeries, and some of her independence, too.
Now she begins 6-7 weeks of daily radiation therapy. Radiation will cover her whole brain and spine, and then focus solely on the brain. While radiation brings with it the risk of some negative long-term effects, doctors emphasized how very important this treatment is to her recovery. They told her to expect fatigue to build during the first four weeks and then plateau. After this round of radiation, Katy (maybe after another short period of rest) will begin chemotherapy again.
That's one daunting schedule. But Katy says simply: "It's just what I have to do."
