The fire hydrants in the area need to be shoveled out; In the event of a fire, the time required for our responders to clear out a hydrant could cost someone their life or their home.
The Fire Department, as well as The Portsmouth Water and Fire District, will be checking hydrants and shoveling as needed. This may take some time; if you are physically able to safely clear out hydrants near your home please do so.

Early Sunday morning, the Portsmouth Water and Fire District water system operators and its two on-call contractors began clearing the snow around the 565 hydrants within the District and finished the job early Monday evening. Portsmouth Water thanks the residents that cleared many of the hydrants in advance - it helped get the job done faster.
