Asking for Your Vote in the Democratic Primary

To the Editor,

I'm Andrew Kelly, a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, graduate of our schools, Eagle Scout, and community volunteer, and I ask for your vote in the upcoming Democratic primary.  I have been a vocal advocate for open meetings, strong fiscal accountability, and uncompromising quality, and I support a well-rounded education for our students.

Three generations on both sides of my family currently live in Portsmouth. My parents Paul and Bev Kelly, my Brother Brad and Sister Veronica, my Uncle Ted and Aunt Maryellen Fischer and Uncle Peter Kelly, and my grandparents, Dale and Paula Bradley and Ann Calcutt are all proud to call Portsmouth home.

I am enrolled at Bristol Community College in the Criminal Justice Transfer Program, and I serve on the BCC Student Senate. As a 2010 Graduate of Portsmouth High School, I have first-hand experience of the school system and a personal understanding of the importance of providing a well rounded education.  While in high school, I served as the PHS Drama Club Secretary and the Portsmouth Chapter of National Art Honor Society Historian. As part of my Senior Project, I created the website http://www.portsmouthrihistory.webs.comto teach people about the rich history of Portsmouth.

For my Eagle Scout community service project, I organized and led the Common Fence Point Improvement Association Building Beautification Project.  I am now a life member of National Eagle Scout Association and an Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America Troop 82, based at Saint Mary’s in Portsmouth.

In addition to volunteering at school and with the Boy Scouts of America, I have been appointed by the Town Council to serve on three town committees: the Portsmouth Economic Development Committee, the Elmhurst Planning Committee, and the Portsmouth Charter Review Committee.

I also volunteer in the community. I am on the Board of Directors for the Portsmouth Community Theater. I am a parishioner of Saint Anthony’s and I have volunteered yearly for the Saint Vincent DePaul Society. I am a lifelong member of the Quahaug Chapter Camping Club and North American Family Campers Association.

I support both the Arts and Sports in Portsmouth and will work toward improving the programs that are offered to students in all grade levels.  Students in Portsmouth deserve a well-rounded education, not just reading, writing and arithmetic.  Art, music, and sports are fundamental parts of education, not extras.

I respectfully ask for your support in the Democratic primary and I also ask that you support the other endorsed Democrats, Emily Copeland and Terri Cortvriend. Collectively, we stand for smart fiscal management that drives quality education; strong respectful relationships with our employees, parents, and community; open dialog amongst stakeholders; and excellence in all facets of our schools.

Respectfully Submitted,

Andrew V. Kelly

Jim, I am sorry to say the School Committee has no control over bridge tolls, but as I have said on this website, I do not believe it is fair that out of 749 bridges in Rhode Island the two they want to toll are both in Newport County. I also am a regular use of the Sakonnet River Bridge.

A long winded self endorsement. Your going to work for what and who? What can you actually do? Name one thing you alone are going to accomplish ? Youve said nothing we havent heard before.

You're last sentence epitomizes politicians in general, more often than not! A young, enthusiastic, community minded new face may be all this town needs! We should be proud of this 2010 graduate! Long winded? NO! Confident, YES! My vote goes to you, Andrew!!

I am running for School Committee because I am concerned about the quality of our schools. In the past two years we have spent a lot of money on legal fees, drove our staffs moral into the dirt, saw the creation of a NEW administrative position and the mass exodus of our most senior and qualified staff. I believe we need to take the schools in a better and more respectful direction.

A better and more respectful direction ? Really? Which direction is suddenly so important to you ? You have committed to nothing and have stated as much. Cricket, you must be love struck to take a martry position like that. Sorry, the town needs more than you two.

Incidentally, legal fees did not run the staff out,ur new super did. Face facts. Taking a 20000 dollar pay cut was worth it to one,he was a great assett to our schools here. Not anymore,,Thanks to citizens who tolerate mediocraty. You being one!

Andrew,
I voted for you last time you ran. I believe I may vote for you again. At first thought, the above question about tolls does seem irrelevant for someone running for school committee. But then you have to consider that some of Portsmouth students (those from Little Compton) use the Sakonnet River Bridge daily. Additionally, PMS and PHS sports team busses will occasionally use it too. So, as a potential school committee member you might consider making an official stand regarding the tolls. Compare it to an LNG terminal in Fall River and LNG tankers transiting the Narragansett Bay East Passage. Our town council has no control over ships transiting the bay. Nevertheless they took an official stand on the matter which contributed to Hess’s decision to drop the proposal for building the terminal.

Dear fellow Portsmouth Democrat(s) and unaffiliated(s): Tomorrow, is our chance to take the first step towards returning the integrity to the Portsmouth School System. Please vote for Copeland, Cortvriend and Kelly, The ENDORSED Democrats. They need your support NOW (and then again in the general election). Let's get back to a strong educational system with both certified and support staff that are appreciated by the committee members!

When was that WatchfulEye ? Run the numbers north and south and see where your school stackes up? If they paid as much attention to education as they do sports, then we have some impressive stats. You townies are more concerned with turf and track issues for 4 months out of the year. The same townies that brought the Great wind Mill Icon!! The same ones that brokered your dump dealsetc,,,Fix the taxes, fix the town, fix the schools. Its a mentallity issue . The teachers i have seen in recent years look like they are either coming from a lounge or going to one. Kids cant take these schools seriously. The kids,,,,They Are the bottom Line.

Citizen Kane, I'm too old to be love struck! However, I know a smart, aggressive and eager young candidate when I see one! And let me remind you, that this young man was not that long ago, one of the "kids" that you referred to! He just might "see" with better eyes than others!

Andrew I see a lot of volunteer work and memberships, but have you ever held a job that pays money? It seems like you are trying to become a life long politician.
