This summer, the America's Cup World Series comes to Newport and huge crowds of tourists are expected on the island.
Newport and Middletown are busy making plans to capitalize on this influx of visitors, planning events, parking schemes, hotel packages and transportation alternatives. While much of the preparation for this event are focused on money-making venues at Fort Adams - bleachers, viewing areas, etc. - aside from the obvious sailing equipment connection at Melville, I haven't seen or heard of anyone in Portsmouth looking at ways to entice any of these visitors (and their money) to Portsmouth.
Perhaps we don't really care about business opportunities? Perhaps we just don't want to have to deal with the traffic, etc. surrounding such an event?
The problem is that the traffic will be here anyway. Whether or not anyone stops and spends their cash in Portsmouth depends on what we have to offer - so far I have seen nothing planned.
Why couldn't we come up with some events in Portsmouth - something to showcase our beautiful town and its scenic views? Perhaps a town fair or concert at Sandy Point Beach or the Glen? How about the idea of "A Taste of Island Park," a walking tour of Island Park restaurants/bars held over a weekend with participating bars/restaurants along Park Avenue providing a taste of their wares?
I'm sure some of you have ideas about this - please put them in comments and maybe we can get some of the business owners and civic leaders interested in actually doing something, rather than sitting back and watching the tourists drive by.

Your on the economic development committee with the town. What is the State's master plan and how can Portsmouth blend into the plan. We need to think of RI as a whole with this opportunity and if feasible grab the opportunity. You should be ashamed of this message, instead of YOU sitting back and taking the ideas how about reaching out to the State's economic development group and reaching out to the local business communittee. Another example of a Portsmouth committee wasting time/efforts.

Actually East Side, the Portsmouth Business Director has already "reached out" to the other groups working on this. What have you done about it? I'm looking for some people with ideas. What are yours? And if I'm wasting time, its only my own.

Actually Doug, constantly going back to the people of Portsmouth for ideas when this is the job of the economic committee isn't doing anyone in Portsmouth any good. This is why the economic development group was formed - for you and your group to stimulate business in Portsmouth.
I can't believe you actually think this is about your time. The economic development group was not formed so that you would have something to do.
In addition, what have the others in your "mafia" on this hobby group actually come up with for ideas and executed on. I'd like to bring this up at a future Town Hall session.

East side, why work on an initiative if people would be against it. Any economic development should involve the people who will be affected by the impact. Good planning involves all interested parties. Smart planning is the key to success .
