The Harlem Shake is an YouTube worldwide dance contagion that originated with comedian and video blogger Filthy Frank and went wildly viral last month. NASA is known for supplying some of the most engaging images of planets, asteroids, galaxies, stars and other celestial bodies. Now, the space agency is enthralling us with images of our own planet. Chris Hatfield, commander of the current International Space Station mission, released a stunning image via Twitter of the Washington area from a height of 230 miles this week. In the image, you can clearly make out the convergence of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers, as well as some details of the infamous street layout of the city. The image is the latest in a series of Earth-focused images from NASA. Two acts are scheduled to open the Newport Jazz Festival at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The festival runs from Aug. 2-4.
The Newport Jazz Festival has announced that Natalie Cole will be the opening act for this year's festival, along with the Bill Charlap Trio with special guest Freddy Cole. The jazz festival begins on Friday, Aug. 2 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. More than 25 acts are scheduled to perform at Fort Adams State Park on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3-4. The legendary musician returns to the Ryan Center after five years for a show in April. Tickets go on sale Friday.
Bob Dylan will return to Rhode Island to play at the Ryan Center on April 8 with Dawes, according to his Website and Global Spectrum staff. Information has also been distributed via the Ryan Center’s Facebook page, and has been circling around on social media as a result. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 1 at 10 a.m. Tickets are $68 for VIP Floor (limited quantity), $48 for the general public, $38 for URI faculty and staff, and $28 for URI students. The faculty, staff and student tickets are limited. According to staff at the Ryan Center, a formal release about the show is scheduled to be sent out on Thursday morning. The Rhode Island-filmed Moonrise Kingdom lost in its Oscar category for Best Original Screenplay.
Wes Anderson’s "Moonrise Kingdom," which was shot entirely in Rhode Island, lost Sunday night in its bid for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. When it comes to the Newport Folk Festival, it pays to plan ahead. Despite expanding to a three-day schedule, it seems folk fans just can’t get enough. Five months before the event, all tickets except for Friday passes have sold out. Yes, that means that all early bird, three-day, two-day, and Saturday passes have been snatched up. To purchase the $49 Friday tickets, click here. This is the fastest that weekend tickets have sold out to date. Last year, weekend tickets sold out in April. Greenvale Vineyards will hold its 14th annual Jazz for Kids concert today, Thursday, at the vineyard on Wapping Road as part of Newport's Winter Festival. The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Musicians will include vocalist Tish Adams, Dick Lupino on bass and guest musician Yvonne Monnett. The artists will entertain guests with songs kids. Complimentary refreshments will be served for the kids and wine tasting will be available to purchase for adults. The event is free and open to the public!
