A 1993 hypertext novel by Portsmouth science fiction writer John G. McDaid is among the works to be studied under a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant.
A Portsmouth resident's 1993 hypertext novel will be studied under a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant awarded to the Electronic Literature Organization (ELO), the group announced on their Web site last Friday. According to ELO, the NEH awarded a $52,000 digital humanities grant to explore and preserve the first generation of digital texts, many of which preceded the World Wide Web. Among the works chosen were Portsmouth science fiction writer John G. McDaid's "Uncle Buddy's Phantom Funhouse" (1993). "I'm delighted to see the Funhouse included," said McDaid. Newport Folk Festival has added Beck to the 2013 artist lineup. "I like Beck’s new work without any accompanying instruments. Good songwriter. Good singer. Please welcome him to this year’s festival,” said American folk singer Pete Seeger. Over the last month, the Newport Folk Festival has been announcing its 2013 lineup one artist at a time. This year's festival will take place from July 26- July 28. Beck is scheduled on Sunday, July 28. The Newport Waterfront Events at the Newport Yachting Center announces it has added three more headliners to the 2013 Nantucket Nectars Sunset Music Series, bringing the total number of concerts scheduled to-date to 11. The latest additions to the line-up are Southern rock jam band, Gov’t Mule, one of the most successful American bands in rock history, Chicago, and the Under The Sun Tour featuring Smash Mouth, Sugar Ray and Gin Blossoms with Special Guest, Fastball. According to a new report designed to measure the economic impact of the Newport festivals, the events contribute to $5 million in direct spending in Rhode Island.
At the request of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), Newport Festivals Foundation commissioned a study designed to measure the economic impact of the 2012 Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals on the state of Rhode Island. This study was conducted by Advantage Marketing Information, North Kingstown. The results of the 19-page report concluded that in 2012: “This report confirms that the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals provide a tremendous boost to Rhode Island’s tourist economy,” said DEM Director Janet Coit. “The Festivals are a huge draw, attracting thousands of attendees to Fort Adams each year who impact the local economy by spending close to $5 million on lodging, food and beverages, shopping, and …

The Harlem Shake is an YouTube worldwide dance contagion that originated with comedian and video blogger Filthy Frank and went wildly viral last month.
