UPDATED: Vehicle Crashes Into Portsmouth Liquor Store; One Transported To Hospital
Black ice caused a vehicle to crash into a Portsmouth liquor store Tuesday morning.
Updated at 2:18 p.m. The following story has been modified from its previous version.
One person was transported by ambulance Tuesday morning after the vehicle he was operating crashed into the Portsmouth Wine and Spirits liquor store on West Main Road.
Portsmouth Police Lt. Brian Peters said the crash occurred at 7:18 a.m.
A 2002 Dodge Durango, operated by 35-year-old Daniel Kelly of Portsmouth, was traveling north on West Main Road when the vehicle left the roadway due to hazardous road conditions.
"He (the operator) lost control of the vehicle due to black ice," Peters said.
The vehicle travelled across the southbound lane and crashed into the front of Portsmouth Wine and Spirits.
Kelly was transported by Portsmouth Rescue to Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, MA. He was treated for injuries and later released, said a spokesperson for the hospital.
The vehicle sustained disabling damage and was towed away from the scene.
Hard Deadlines blogger John McDaid reported the crash left a five-foot hole in the front of the store and destroyed the window.
No one was inside the store at the time of the crash, said Deputy Fire Chief Michael Cranson.
The liquor store at 1557 West Main Road was previously known as Gleeson's Package Store. The business was sold to new owners last year, who changed the name.

"Black Ice might have been a factor"; are you kidding? Black ice was a major widespread issue statewide and the DOT's non-proactive response to it was ludicrous. Don't they monitor the weather? Budget issue???

The black ice this morning was absolutely treacherous.
The only person who seems to have been sampling the delights at Gleeson's would be the copy editor at the Patch..."*One person* was transported by ambulance Tuesday morning after the vehicle *they* were operating..."
Sheesh.

Nard Glimrod, if the police have not disclosed the gender of the "one person" involved in the accident then the copy editor of the Patch is correct in using "they"!

Uh, no, Beverly, it's wrong. The author/editor could have taken several different approaches to getting it right. One might have been:
"One person was transported by ambulance Tuesday morning after the vehicle he or she was operating..."
The above would have indicated that the gender of the vehicle's operator was unknown and would have nicely emphasized that this was "breaking news".
As an aside, I enjoyed the chirpy and passionate use of an exclamation point at the end of your post. Was your little fist all balled up and shaking as you typed?
Have fun.

Getting tired of the english majors taking shots at article submissions. These people are compensated very little, if it all, for their service. This site provides a unique service; there is no other source that provides truly local news, often within minutes of the event.
Those unwilling to sacrifice quality for timeliness should frequent another site.

To Mike P - This site is all about getting the community involved. Good/bad comments are going to happen. To summarize - deal with it or take your own advice.

East Side - Nothing wrong with commenting about the article’s content. Taking shots at the writers is arrogant and petty. Furthermore, the act contributes nothing to the conversation. In summary, those posts are of little value to anyone.
