Turbine Spinning After Minor Repairs
Workers installed a new oil pressure sensor and performed routine maintenance.
The turbine at Portsmouth High School is spinning again after workers installed a new oil pressure sensor last Friday.
"Once the new one was installed everything was working just fine," said Assistant Town Planner Gary Crosby. "We fixed the problem and it's been operational ever since."
The turbine stopped spinning last week after an error message appeared. The repair costs were minimal and only a "few bucks," Crosby said.
While the turbine was stopped, workers were also able to perform routine 6-month maintenance to keep the windmill spinning smoothly.

Would still like to see the balance sheet, are we making money or lossing money?

Lossing money? Gee, I hope we are not lossing money. That would be bad. Government does things very often that do not make money. They are needed becasue they serve the public good - for right or wrong. If Raytheon, Boeing, or you for that matter, could make money running the DMV, they and you would. A fire department is not profitable - but it is necessary.

Lossing??? Losing?

I think this minor typographical error is understood. Praise in public, punish in private.

Robert A fire department is not profitable - but it is necessary a wind turbine should be profitable and is not necessary. The wind turbine only serves the public good when it is making money when it is losing money it is a public detriment.

This morning neither turbine was spinning due to low winds I assume and this afternoon the Portsmouth town turbine was moving like molasseses.
Lee has a point - show the balance sheet.

Okay, show the balance sheet, but if you are not satisfied what would you recommend?
This project was done with the highest degree of integrity and the voters approved it. The eligible voter count for that election was 12,183. The wind turbine was question #2 and the final count was Approve 2,333 and Reject 1,530.
The 800 vote approval meant this Town would be a leader in green energy.
Sure there have been problems, the biggest was the compamy we bought it from. I'm not anti Canada, but this should have been an American made turbine.
Contact Gary Crosby 643 0332 or Dave Faucher 683 9118 for the year end information.
I do believe the 2013 budget information has a breakdown of expense vs revenue.
Let's realize the Turbine is here to stay and stop being critical.
It's a wind turbine, approved by the voters, making electric power being sold to National Grid for the benefit of the Town of Portsmouth taxpayers.
I was proud when this opportunity came to this Town & I'm still proud.

John - well said, indeed. I think at times we need to realize that public service needs to take chances too. If they fail, we learn from it. The "wisdom" of the private sector sometimes neglects the fact that so much of what occurs has public financing. DARPA and the DoD as well as other agencies have funded things that we use every day. The Internet did not come about because of private sector dollars . .. . . aerospace ...rural electirfication . ..the interstate highway system ... ..

The idea that Government needs to enter the power business is ludicrous but I suppose this line of reasoning covers over the economic disaster portion of the idea.

The turbine has been turning ? Is there sufficient wind ? Wind today will be 10 to 15 mph from the SW ?

The Portsmouth wind turbine broke down over a two dollar part according to town officials back in May. The reference was that a part that cost a "few bucks" needed to be replaced. The had pushed the restart override button so many times that must have broke also. There is plenty of wind now and the high school turbine isn't spinning ? How high does the wind need to get to spin the turbine ? I thought it was fixed this week ?

Is there still a Porthsmouth Economic Development Committee ? There is nothing on their website for 2012 . The turbine went of line on March 18 was turned over to the Town on March 24,2009. The turbine is a little over three years old. Do you know why they stopped posting information on the website ?
I would like to see the maintance records for the past two years.
I'm looking for the predictive maintenance activities? Wind turbine components routinely fail before their design life is reached, resulting in significant unplanned and costly repairs, which is a problem the wind industry has been dealing with in relation to the modern Megawatt class of wind turbines.
Predictive maintenance tools, (sensors), installed on critical components, like gearboxes and generators, reduce the threat of sudden and unexpected failures in these components.
Give me a little help here . What town dept keeps the records ?
