Senate Hearing On Legislation To Block Tolls Is Today
The Senate Committee on Finance will hear testimony from residents, town officials and business owners across the East Bay on Wednesday.
The Senate Committee on Finance will hear testimony from residents, town officials and business owners on two bills regarding the repeal of the Sakonnet River Bridge transfer.
Town Administrator James Goncalo urged community members to attend the hearing, which will be on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 4 p.m. in room 313 at the State House in Providence.
"The senate is looking primarily for statements from business people in here and in Tiverton," said Tiverton Councilor Jay J. Lambert. "They are looking to keep those statements to around two minutes."

Previously, local legislators said the county's best chance to block tolls would be by identifying alternative revenue services to keep up with the $38 million maintenance price tag that the four bridges require.

The testimony went well. The Senate Finance Committee has a good picture of why a toll would be economically disastrous to the area. Senate Bill 242 is a bold, fresh, innovative approach to solving a problem and addressing a number of key issues. The PBA and the other anti-toll groups will update area residents as information becomes available. The testimony will be on Channel 15 - Capitol TV soon.
