For a School and Town that says they have no money, they have no trouble spending it. And Why an additional Principal? The elementary schools had no problem running with K-5 and no additonal principal or assistant principal. I also do not like the names. The building is Portsmouth Middle School, period!!!! Leave it at that. This Superintendent sure does like adding the mucho buck staff and frills.
Wondering What This Town is Thinking??

I completly agree with "Town Resident" above. In this economy and with the school department always crying it doesn't have enough money, why in the world would they think it would be "okay" to put another high paying position on the payroll. Unbelievable! Also, leave the name as is. No one will call it by a new name anyway; it will always be Portsmouth Middle School. You would think there would be more important things to think about.

You don't get it - naming 4th/5th grade something special will help 'justify' a principal!

A principal for two grades?? How about one superintendent for Portsmouth, Middletown, and Newport. One principal per town for all schools. One school committee for all three towns. Cut from the top down.

Okay if they feel there is a need then I guess the move to the middle school wasn't that great. Too many kids for one principal to handle. How are the kids holding up?
