School Committee to Discuss Teacher Contract Negotiations, Council Considers Raising Park Fees

Here's a look at what's happening in Portsmouth on Monday, April 11.

 

Get ready for the start of a busy Monday. Here's what's happening in Portsmouth today:

  1. The Portsmouth School Committee has a tight schedule this evening. According to the agenda, the School Committee will meet in executive session with the Town Council at 6 p.m. at Town Hall, regarding "collective bargaining."
  2. The School Committee will then hold a public forum regarding the ongoing talks with the local teachers' union at 7 p.m. at Portsmouth High School. This forum is open to the public.
  3. The Town Council meets at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. Among the items listed under new business is a request to raise fees at Sandy Point Beach and Melville Campgrounds. The agenda is posted at right.
  4. Ballroom dance lessons happen tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. at the senior center.
  5. St. Mary's Church holds its Bridge Club meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the church.

So, the town council is looking to raise fees at Melville Campground? That's fine so long as we're providing value to the campers. Why don't we install an in-ground pool? Why not purchase and rent kayaks at Sandy Point? Why would the average tourists want to go to Sandy Point while there are better beaches nearby? Again, we need to provide value- something the other beaches don't have.
