Rep. Reilly Named 'Friend of Small Business'

Rep. Daniel P. Reilly (R-Portsmouth, Middletown) this week was named a “Friend of Small Business” by the National Federation of Independent Business.

The following is from a press release submitted by Rep. Dan Reilly.

Rep. Daniel P. Reilly (R-Portsmouth, Middletown) this week was named a “Friend of Small Business” by the National Federation of Independent Business for the 2011-2012 legislative session.

The Federation cited Rep. Reilly’s work on pension reform as well as successful legislation requiring cost benefit analysis of current and future government regulations for their support. Additionally, Reilly’s opposition to the sales tax expansion to small businesses is “greatly appreciated by Main Street business owners and the tens of thousands of people who work in Rhode Island small businesses,” according to the federation.

“I am greatly honored to receive this designation by a very important group. For too long Rhode Island government has turned its back on small businesses and we desperately need to keep reforming the way the state does business so we can help small businesses thrive,” Rep. Reilly said.

“There is much work that remains to be done, however. Repeal or reduction of taxes that place our state in an uncompetitive position economically and fighting against financially disastrous bridge tolls remain my priorities going forward. We will never be successful until we become more attractive to businesses than at least our neighboring states.”

The National Federation of Independent Business is the “nation’s leading small business association” which gives small and independent business owners a voice in shaping the public policy issues that affect their business.

They probably thought they were giving this award to a Boy Scout - the funny thing is, a badge was included.

He is against the tolls. He has offered a number of ideas and one has a great deal of merit. He is on the RI House budget committee and has first hand knowledge of the numbers on many issues. The state brings in about $42 million annually from license and tag fees. He has suggested redirecting a portion of this to DOT specifically for annual maintenance for the four main bridges to Aquidneck Island. Folks from DOT and RITBA have offered estimates that the annual maintenance for these four bridges would be $12-15 million. It is well within the capability of the state to fund annual bridge maintenance for these four bridges without putting in tolls.

Good job Rep. Reilly. We need someone like you to continue to stand up to the democrat leadership. They represent the unions and special interest groups and you represent the taxpayers. Keep up the good work.
