Readers' Choice: Best Park in Portsmouth
Where do you like to get out and enjoy the warmer weather?
As the weather gets warmer and the daylight hours extend, it's tempting to want to spend most of your time outdoors. Because really, what's nicer than a picnic or frisbee toss at one of our many local parks, or an afternoon with the kids at one of our playgrounds?
With the official start of spring on Tuesday, we want to know: what's your favorite outdoor space in Portsmouth?
Is it Glen Park, the Island Park Playground, Glen Farm, Founder's Brook, Melville School Playground, Turnpike Avenue Playground, Melville Park or someplace else?
Vote in our poll and share your thoughts in the comments section below. If we left your favorite park or playground off the list, note that in the comments as well.
If your favorite green space is is Newport, go here to vote in that Patch poll.
We'll leave the poll up all week then close voting at 9 a.m. Friday. At noon that day, we'll share your top local pick. Then be sure to watch the site over the weekend when we tally up the top votes and announce the park that got the most rave reviews across all of our Rhode Island sites.
Because this poll is not scientific, it is not the sole consideration in choosing a winner. The winner will be determined by the Patch editor, based on poll results and reviews on Patch Places. For full details on our rules, see the attached PDF. Please vote only once per survey, per Patch.

Common Fence Point playground is for CFP residents only, not open to the public. The families that live there should join the association and pay the yearly fee to support their unique community hall and the non profit association. So nix Kim B's earlier vote.

Sorry, R.P. I was unaware that it is private. My daughter's friend lives there, so she goes to the park and enjoys it. In that case, knowing that it is not open to the public, my vote goes to the Turnpike Ave Playground.

so does that mean the people who live in CFP are paying for the upkeep of the park? Does it come from their association fees or does it come from other tax payers who don't live there?

I have lived in Common Fence Point for over 20 years, I do belong to the association but didn't realize the park was off limits to others who don't live there. I think its ashame. Its such a pretty area for all and watching families enjoy themselves there either to watch their children on the playground or enjoy playing catch and haveing lunch under the trees should be for all. I will not be renewing my membership.

The common areas of CFP are tax exempt from Town property taxes, and they are for the benefit of all Townsfolk. It is NOT private property, it is public, as is access to the coastline surrounding it.

Does everyone think the Common Fence Point park should be included in the poll? I'll add it if people think it should.

What is the rule on using playgrounds at the schools? Only when school isn't in session, correct? Just wondering if someone could shed some light on this.... thanks!

Thank-you for your question Amy. I'm not sure the answer to this. Maybe someone from the schools knows the answer?

The Common Fence Point Playground is NOT just for members of CFPIA or CFP residents! Anyone may enjoy the playground which is maintained by the Common Fence Point Improvement Association. Common Fence Point residents pay taxes like every other home owner. The community hall, the ball field, the playground and the beach areas (40 acres) were left in trust to the trustees to maintain in the 1920's. The playground was up-graded in 2001 and I am the playground chairperson who orders the mulch, purchases new bubble panels when they are vandalized and keeps the trash collected. So, if you have any further questions, please get the correct answers before speaking out. Jackie Shearman

Why does one person make a statement and everyone assumes its true? Also, WHAT???? I have lived here (not in CFP) a long time and have never felt that the people in CFP feel that way... I spend a fair amount of time in that playground and have never found the residents anything but kind and friendly...

Jennifer, I would suggest you ignore internet trolls. Especially those with screen names like TSTLIP.
