Portsmouth Schools To Spend $8,000 on Security
In response to the Newtown, CT, shooting, the Portsmouth School District is taking steps to increase security.
The Portsmouth School District will spend $8,000 to increase security at schools following the shooting in Newtown, CT, reported The Providence Journal on Thursday.
The school district will purchase new ID badges for employees and make improvements to intercom systems, according to The Journal.
The steps are being taken in response to the shooting in Newtown, CT, which is being considered the worst school shooting in recent U.S. history.
Portsmouth schools are also flying green flags in memory of the Newtown, CT, victims.

I spoke with my grammar school principal from 50 years ago. She says that the principal, a janitor or a group of teachers should have weapons training and be armed in ALL schools. No need to spend extra dollars on outside security which doesn't do much good, i.e., Columbine. If the kids DO NOT know who is armed this will be more of a deterrent to any one inside the school who would contemplate shooting.
We need to be more aggressive about identifying those students who are alienated, bullied, and have mental heath issues and get them counseling.

The lunch ladies are packing heat! Most crimes occur in the cafeteria since you can get the largest crowds.

Hate to be the one to burst everyone's bubble but when you pick up kids from the middle school when they stay late you don't have to sign them out or show I'd. They just walk right put to you and you leave. No security at all . And during the day you can walk in the front door at anytime with no buzzing in or anything. Doors are unlocked.

Your comments and concerns might better serve the children of this town if they were brought to the attention of administration rather than a public post noting the specific vulnerabilities of our middle school.

Sad to say but, they know this and have known this for a few years and feel what they have is good enough. On a public venue may get better results if enough parents voice concern, more needs to be done than this current 8,000 fix but it is a good start
