Assistant Superintendent to Leave Portsmouth for Providence Schools
Assistant Superintendent Colleen Jermain will join the Providence School District.
Assistant Superintendent Colleen Jermain is leaving the Portsmouth School District for a position with Providence schools.
Jermain, who has served in Portsmouth since November 2004, was appointed Monday as chief of staff performance and technology integration for the Providence School District. The position becomes effective mid-November.
"This is a tremendous professional opportunity for Colleen and one offering her many exciting challenges and opportunities as she continues her own journey in making a difference," wrote Superintendent Lynn Krizic in an e-mail.
Krizic listed Jermain's successes during her tenure with the school district, stating her work brought "instructional change and innovation."
"Under her leadership, there has been a tremendous focus placed on teaching and learning, RTI, the implementation of personal literacy plans, assessments, and technology for teaching and work productivity," Krizic wrote. "Colleen has been a strong advocate for professional development and the development of teacher leaders within the district ... Please join me in wishing her much success in her new role."
Jermain's departure not only marks the second top administrator to leave Portsmouth schools this year, but the second to leave for Providence.
In January, former School Superintendent Susan Lusi announced she would not seek a contract renewal. Lusi later announced she accepted a position as interim superintendent of Providence schools.
The Portsmouth School District also posted on ad Wednesday on SchoolSpring.com, a site used by Portsmouth and other school districts to solicit educators and administrative candidates.
The ad, which can be seen in its entirety here, seeks applications for the position of interim assistant superintendent of instruction and assessment.
The ad lists the interim position's term as lasting from Nov. 16, 2011, to June 30, 2012.
The qualifications include a minimum of a master’s degree with strong emphasis on curriculum and instruction, five years teaching experience and a minimum of five years of successful administrative experience.
The salary range is between $105,000 to $115,000 per year. Applicants are asked to contact.

This is a real loss for Portsmouth. Colleen Jermain was a real pro: she was always prepared to discuss the latest metrics, could explain the intricacies of curriculum and the continuous improvement efforts she led, and she represented Portsmouth well on state-wide programs like RTTT. She served our town -- and our kids -- with distinction. Thanks, Colleen, and best of luck.

Colleen will be deeply missed. Her dedication, committent, and impact on the Portsmouth School System was underestimated and underappreciated. I am concerned that we have the lost the top 2 Administrators in our system. I hope this is not a pattern and there are not more to come. --- Good Luck Colleen and Godspeed; I know you will do a bang up job in Providence and once again Providence's gain is Portsmouth's loss.

Mr> Carpender, as a mother of three elementary aged children of the district I find your comments curious at best. I have little knowledge of Ms. Germain's work and have not met her, I wish her well. For you to suggest concern over adminstartor departure should invoke you taking a look in the mirror. I believe you are are former school committee chairperson and you voted to close an elementary school, move our fourth grade (9year olds) to the middle school and voted to deprive my children of art and music last year. You did this with the support of Dr. Lusi. I am a fourth grade parent and many of us are upset about your horrible decision. I am grateful you no longer represent us and that Dr. Lusi is gone. I am hopeful our current administartors can fix your very bad decisions.

Concernedmother3 and JEWL4, I usually don't respond to individuals that will not identify themselves publicly. With that said - As I said publicly with every controversial decision I ever made those with a differing opinion have a right to that opinion and I respect that right. As I have also said publicly we should be able to agree to disagree but we don't need disagreeable. There are also disenters to that decision that I continue to have a good relationship with.
