Portsmouth Orders Mandatory Evacuations for Island Park, Common Fence Point

The Portsmouth Middle School will open as an emergency shelter on Saturday at 4 p.m. for residents.

Island Park and Common Fence Point residents are being asked to evacuate from their homes on Saturday afternoon before Hurricane Irene arrives.

The town of Portsmouth has issued a mandatory evacuation for Island Park, Common Fence Point and all trailer parks, including Sunny Acres, effective on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Portsmouth Middle School will open as an emergency shelter on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Residents are being urged to leave their homes and seek shelter with friends or family members first. If unable to seek shelter, residents should then head to the Portsmouth Middle School.

The middle school can temporarily house 500 people, according to Portsmouth Fire Chief Jeffrey P. Lynch. Another section of the school may be opened to accomodate more residents.

Residents are being urged to leave Saturday afternoon instead of Sunday to stay on top of weather changes.

"If they wait until Hurricane Irene arrives, they are not going to be able to get out and we won't be able to get in," said Lynch.

Residents should be prepared to travel with three-days worth of medications, non-perishable food items, clothing, bottled water and any bedding, such as a light blanket and pillow.

"If people can, bring a cot or a very small air mattress. We have very limited supplies," Lynch said.

Domestic animals, such as cats and dogs, will be allowed at the shelter. However, they must be leashed or in a crate.

Prudence Island and Hog Island

According to Lynch, Hog Island was evacuated on Friday. Prudence Island residents are also advised to leave Friday before ferry service is cancelled.

The Prudence Island Ferry will operate on Saturday, but may stop service on Sunday and Monday. An extra run has been added to Saturday's service.

Beaches

Sandy Point Beach has been ordered closed on Saturday due to the weather.

The state of Rhode Island has also ordered the closing of all beaches for Saturday, including Teddy's Beach

That's not actually a picture of Island Park. It is part of Blue Bill Cove, Rt. 24 and an overview of the bay out to Prudence Island

The RIEMA has not ordered an evacuation in Portsmouth according to their website. The Portsmouth town web site also does not indicate an evacuation nor do any of the news media. What is you source please?

The town has posted an evacuation announcement on its Web site. I have just added this pdf to the article. The pdf can be found at right. The town is also referring all questions about the evacuation to the Portsmouth Fire Department, 683-1200.

We were in IP for Gloria & Bob,we left and highly suggest anyone in Island Park and low areas leave. Park Ave was a LAKE after Bob ,took 2 days to get far enough down Boyd's Lane to see if our house was still standing! Truly you cannot get out if you wait too long, people were in boats on Park Ave. Take care,God Bless IP,common ,& Portsmouth!

Portsmouth Park is not part of the evacuated area.

I thought the town was going to get a "code red" reverse 911 system? I've heard nothing on radio or tv about these evacuations. Patch does a great job but the town needs to use multiple ways to communicate to the public, including a more proactive website and social media (Facebool and Twitter).

I agree Doug, the middle school is being used as a emergency shelter. It has not been notated either on the news or radio. Please pass this around to your friends and family.

I'm also wondering if there was any damage done to the Island Park area. I live there but am staying in MA tonight.

Hi Sherri, I've heard of no significant damage, but there is debris, branches and trees fallen all over town. A sailboat struck a waterfront home on Park Avenue this morning. No other damage reported to date.
