Portsmouth High School's Top 10 Outstanding Seniors

Portsmouth High School faculty and administrators recognized 10 graduating seniors for their academic, artistic and civic excellence throughout the past four years.

On Friday, 226 deserving Portsmouth High School students will walk across the stage to receive their diplomas after four years of hard work. This year, faculty and administrators singled out 10 seniors, recognizing the students for academic, artistic and civic achievements over the past four years.

Students are listed in alphabetical order, as selected by Portsmouth High School staff. 

  • Morgan Donovan played varsity soccer for four years and served as captain in her senior year; was selected as a member of the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society; she dances at Position One School of Dance; was presented the Society of Women Engineers Certificate of Achievement for her dedication in science and math; completed six Advanced Placement courses; she will enroll at Villanova University in the fall.
  • Steven Elleman, a member of the PHS symphonic and jazz bands where he plays first trumpet; also sings in the concert choir and plays the violin. He was selected for AllState honors in mixed choir and orchestra; He was one of four American Visions Award recipients in Rhode Island by the RI Art Educators Association; was selected for the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society; while at PHS he completed ten Advanced Placement classes and was named an AP Scholar by the College Board; he will enroll at the University of California at Berkley in the fall.
  • Georges Gauthier, a member of the National Honor Society; ran track and cross-country for all four years;  for his Senior Project he built a biomechanical energy harvester that created electricity in a running shoe;  completed five Advanced Placement courses; will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall.
  • Kathryn Harper, a member of the National and Language Honor Societies; served as vice-president of the Student Council; played and served as captain varsity tennis for four years; completed five Advanced Placement courses; will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the fall where she will continue her tennis career.
  • Matthew Harrigan, a member of the National Honor Society; completed a summer engineering internship at Naval Undersea Warfare Center; served as captain of the varsity ice hockey team and played varsity lacrosse; completed six Advanced Placement courses; was selected as a member of the Class of 2017 at the United States Naval Academy.
  • Kyle Myerson, a member of the National Honor Society; represented PHS on the math team, the Science Olympiad team and in the Northeast Computer Programming Contest; played trumpet for the symphonic band and the jazz band; completed four Advanced Placement courses; will attend Brown University in the fall.
  • Sarah Myerson, a mmber of the National Honor Society; played varsity soccer; was a tutor at Hathaway School; organized a babysitting service as a teacher appreciation project; completed three Advanced Placement courses; will enroll at Smith College in the fall.
  • Lauren Odegaard, a member of the National Honor Society where she served as vice-president; ran on the PHS crosscountry team; played in the symphonic band; completed six Advanced Placement courses; will enter the ROTC program at the University of Virginia in the fall to pursue a degree in nursing and a career in the military.
  • Eliza Petty Drum, a major of the PHS marching band; selected for membership in the NNHS and the NAHS, serving as vice-president; skilled in playing classical piano, she also plays in the flute choir; served as the senior mentor to a group of fourteen freshmen; awarded a Gold Key for her portfolio by the RI Art Educators Association; completed six Advanced Placement courses; this fall she will attend Bard College.
  • Haley Yaw, a member of the National, Art, and Language Honor Societies; served as President of the National Honor Society;  ran on the cross-country, and winter and spring track teams, serving as captain; was a senior mentor to a freshman advisory; completed seven Advanced Placement courses;  In the fall she will enroll at the University of South Carolina.
