Portsmouth Firefighters Battle Tractor Trailer Fire

The gray smoke could be seen from Route 24 on Tuesday morning.

Portsmouth firefighters battled a visible tractor trailer truck fire Tuesday morning on Turnpike Avenue. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were called to the intersection of Turnpike and Freeborn Street at 9:10 a.m. The driver had exited the vehicle before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze in the engine compartment of the vehicle with minor extension to the cab.

According to Capt. Michael Cranson, spokesperson for the department, firefighters were fortunate that this fire was stopped early. Temperatures were well into the 80s at the time of the incident.

As a precaution, firefighters were allowed to remove their 70 lbs. of protective equipment.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
