Poll: Should Smoking Be Banned At Beaches?
State lawmakers are looking at banning smoking at the beach and other outdoor places. Do you agree with this?
It may still be winter, but local lawmakers are already taking a closer look at the health of beach-goers.
Lawmakers are reviewing a proposal by state Rep. Richard Morrison to extend the state's smoking ban outdoors, reports The Providence Journal.
If approved, the ban would prevent smoking at beaches, parks, playgrounds and other outdoor, recreational locations. A vote on Morrison's proposal has not been scheduled at this time.
According to Town Hall employees, there are no ordinances banning smoking at Portsmouth beaches, including Sandy Point Beach.
We wanted to know what you thought about this state proposal. On Portsmouth Patch's Facebook page Wednesday, we asked users if smoking should be banned on beaches.
Here are only a few of the comments posted:
Yes I can hear people saying smokers have rights but so don't the rest of us that don't want to breath their smoke or have to move to another spot or leave the beach because we are allergic to the smoke or have young children with us that we don't want breathing their smoke — Claudette Souza Cottle
No it shouldn't we don't need more laws we need more liberty!! — Kevin Cottle
I don't thnk it needs to be a law, but people should respect beach rules if individual beaches choose to ban smoking. — Melinda Wardell Weldon
Yes or have a special spot they can smoke. — Claire Alba Arrico

Absolutely yes!
Smoking should be illegal anywhere a non-smoker is forced to breath in second hand smoke. The state should follow Providence's Public Housing lead and ban smoking in multifamily housing. There are still many non-smoking people that are forced to breath second hand smoke in their homes or apartments because of smoke flowing through building wide ventilation systems or seeping through walls.

I am not a smoker, and have never smoked. Nevertheless, I don't think that smoking should be banned from the beaches. Smoking is not illegal. Outdoors, the smoke will quickly disperse. In the scheme of things that pollute the air, cigarette smoke is really low on the list. Let's go after trucks and cars that clearly aren't meeting the air quality standards, (which everyone has seen on the road, including police, but they are never pulled over). It's easy to get upset abo cigarette smoke and they make an easy target, but they are not the biggest problem. We should attack air pollution starting with the largest problem. There aren't many places that smokers can still enjoy themselves. We are over-regulating public places like beaches, due to the actions of a few. This is similar to the campaign to ban dogs off-leash on the beach. Rather than address personal responsibility, we go for draconian black/white rules (no I don't own a dog either).

I cannot disagree with you more. I go to the beach to be outside, enjoying the sun and fresh air. What gives someone the right to light up a cigarette, or worse, a cigar and have their smoke drift into my space? It may not bother you, but it definitely bothers me.

Ugly people should not be allowed on the beach I go to the beach to enjoy the natural beauty and ugly people just spoil that. It may not bother you, but it definitely bothers me.

Lets include obnoxious perfumes too.....Why should I have to smell someones perfume instead of fresh air ? Perfumes are filled with all types of chemicals and they do off gas..... How about music on the beach that you might find offensive like some types of Rap Music. Do you see were we can go with this, we have enough goverment regulations as it is.

Beaches should outlaw smoking. The question brings vivid memories of wife and I picking a spot on Sachuest Beach, setting out our beach chairs and umbrella, and as soon as we are seated, smelling the acrid odor of cigaret smoke from an uncaring upwind smoker. We just live with the smoke until the smoker has finished.

These politicians are just a bunch of Hippocrates they need to put their money where their mouths are. I get sick and tired of the politicians telling us how bad cigarettes are for us and how they need to be banned in certain places. That they need to raise taxes to get people to quit smoking it’s all BS. If they were serious about the hazards of smoking they would just outlaw cigarettes and smoking in the state but they don’t want to lose the revenue they get from cigarette taxes. The State Legislature is addicted to cigarette taxes and can’t kick the habit.

Getreal you totally missed my point I am not calling for cigarettes to be outlawed I am saying that politicians like to talk about the dangers of smoking and how they are raising taxes to get people to quit smoking but in reality they would never outlaw smoking because it makes the state too much money.

No they should not make it illegal. I'm sorry if some are offended by the occasional smell that drifts there way,but I am offended truthfully by the smell of perfume. Some people don't like children, but I don't suggest keeping them off the beach. Then there is music.Should we ban that also. I can't stand some of it, but so what. Too bad for me. Stop picking on smokers. I don't want to hear the second hand smoke theory because we are talking about outside.

"I don't want to hear the second hand smoke theory because we are talking about outside." So Lauren, you are saying that cigarette smoke outside is ok? So breathing in "outside" cigarette smoke is not second hand smoke? So that makes it ok? Smoke is smoke. Also, I cannot remember the last time I breathed in carcinogenic perfume fumes at the beach. Comparing carcinogenic cigarette smoke to perfume is idiotic.

People need to look at the bigger picture -- What other things are the politicians to take away from us or decide for use what we can eat, drink, etc. They are already telling us what we have to feed to our children. Look at schools. Have a "smoking section" on the beach. They have a "surfing section" so why not. People are up in arms over the Cranston banner removal because their rights are being stepped on. They don't see this as another right being removed? Can't have your cake and eat it too.

INAPPROPRIATE PHOTO - shameful that this photo is used to discuss smoking. Is the undertone something else, say this girl was smoking would that change people opinion? Smoking in public places is going out slowly so if this law doesn't happen soon, it will happen in the future. Look at what has been done for smoking in bars.

I want smoking banned from beaches because far too many smokers treat the beach like its a gigantic ash tray.
Also, next time you are stopped at an intersection take a look at the ground and you'll notice hundreds of butts. Not cool!
