Poll: Does the Town of Portsmouth Need a Facebook Page?

Do you think the town of Portsmouth needs to be on Facebook?
Portsmouth Patch user Doug Smith does. In his recent Local Voices' post, Smith talks about a recent poll on Newport Patch, which asked users if the City By The Sea should be on Facebook.
"In view of the major public communications issues that we had in Portsmouth during Hurricane Irene, I would hope that our new town administrator and the town leadership will consider looking into the use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter, among other means, such as CodeRed telephone notifications, to keep Portsmouth residents informed," Smith wrote.

You already know what I think about this, but here's why: Since our Town website is not updated frequently with emergency information, Facebook can provide a place for Town officials to get the word out quickly. Add Twitter feeds by Town Departments (like the EMA, Public Works and Police Departments), which can be set to automatically go to Facebook and you have the beginnings of a quick, easy to use and FREE public communications system. If people know where to go for these announcements, they will check their Facebook pages.

I agree with the above, it's important to change with the times. Also, businesses in this area can network on fb as well as promote their goods and services. Sue Hawes

Having been brought up in Portsmouth and attended both Ann Hutchinson and Henry F Anthony before graduating from De La Salle and the wife from St Catherine's we are always interested in the happenings in Portsmouth. True, things have changed and will change further in the future so it would be advisable for the town to get with the program. It would also be an avenue to locate lost friendships throughout this great country of ours.

Why wouldnt the town want to have a facebook page? Its free and just one more way to get important information out to the residents. I would hope that the town would take advantage of any FREE resource like facebook, twitter, google plus as an opportunity to get information out to everyone. I was pretty surprised by the poll results to see that there is a 60/40 split between yes and no. Any reason why the town shouldn't have a facebook page?
