Police Investigating Teacher's Relationship With 17-Year-Old Girl
Patrick Aylward, a Middletown Public School teacher, is under investigation for his relationship with a 17-year-old Middletown girl.
A 39-year-old Middletown teacher's relationship with a 17-year-old Middletown girl is under investigation, said Middletown Superintendent Rosemarie Kraeger. Patrick Aylward, of 9 Nancy St., Fall River, MA, has been placed on paid leave during the investigation.
"The Middletown Police Department is conducting an investigation involving Mr. Aylward stemming from an incident which occurred in Fall River on Feb. 5, 2012," said Lt. Nutt with the Middletown Police Department. "The investigation began after we were contacted by the Fall River Police Department."
On Feb. 16, he allegedly got into an argument with the girl at the Founder's Brook Motel in Portsmouth. During the argument, he allegedly headbutted her in the parking lot. Portsmouth police obtained an affidavit arrest warrant and Aylward turned himself in at the police station on March 9. He was charged with domestic, simple assault.
Last July, Middletown police responded to a domestic argument between Aylward and a 17-year-old girl at the Comfort Inn motel on Aquidneck Ave. Aylward reportedly told police he was a mentor-figure for the girl.
She told police she had broken up with her boyfriend and had asked Aylward for a ride. She became upset, she reportedly told police. Police said she yelled and threw things inside his truck. She told police their relationship was platonic. No arrests were made at that time.

Sounds to me like "Portsmouth Resident" is either Patrick Aylward himself or is one very jealous guy. This account even makes this worse when one states this behavior has come form a "very unstable, troubled teen". This "adult" should have sent her to the guidance office where the school psychologist is and not try and be a "mentor". Very sad all around.

Look I know Pat. Let's just see where this goes? This girl in question seemed to be a troubled teen and no, I'm not posting blame on her. How many times though, do we hear where people get accused of these types of allegations, only to be later found out to be untrue. Now I'm not saying this is the case, and obviously there may have been some things going on with these earlier events. The Pat I know, is a good guy and I know that he has mentored a few kids(all having good outcomes). Sometimes the intentions to help someone are valid, but maybe the circumstances may warrant better judgement. People are so apt to jump to conclusions before the evidence is fully looked at. Let's the investigation take it's course and then we can all make our conclusions.

East Side- Spirit? Well first, nothing has been substanciated as fact as of yet. These are allegations. Secondly, I think you are pretty bold to make a statement to say, that he is all done. Lets, for conversation sake, say he is innocent of these allegations. You're so quick to write him off like a bad debt. Pretty arrogant of you to do so. Instead I would say, if innocent, supporting him may be the right action. In this society of ours it is so much more accepted to do the easy thing and as oppossed to doing the right thing.

Ralph - Spirit and substanciated fact are different. If he is innocent and that is a substanciated fact he was still involved in the spirit of one that would act innopropriately. Thus, he is a write off to me. To many pieces of this story narrow in that this person is a creep, innocent or not innocent. I take the easy route - he's a creep and I write him off.

East Side- I understood your meaning of "spirit". I was being cynical. However, being in spirit, is a judgement call at best by any person not informed of all the facts. Plus If innocent, IF mind you, seems his motives were to help, not harm. So again, I think it inappropriate to large any pressumptions on what the outcome should be for Mr Aylward. I don't attain to bring innocence or guilt to Pat. I am just stating the fact that an investigation is just starting and opinion is baseless, even if the information supplied by this article seems to narrow down one conclusion or another.

A lot of us know Pat, and have for many, many years. I'm shocked to even hear it, as are many others. But, the fact of the matter is, this whole situation does not play well for him at all. Poor judgement?, without a doubt. More to the story?, without a doubt.
One thing is for sure though, all the spin Portsmouth Resident wants to try to put on it may help in the court of public opinion, but won't do a thing for him within the walls of the courthouse. And BTW, PR go check the police reports to verify the reporting.

Can you read? "Last July, Middletown police responded to a domestic argument between Aylward and a 17-year-old girl at the Comfort Inn motel on Aquidneck Ave. Aylward reportedly told police he was a mentor-figure for the girl."
Please note: HE told police he was a mentor-figure, after he was caught in her company. That is at the very least a violation on Middletown School policy. Get over it, this guy was wrong.

I'm not condeming the guy, but let's look at the facts.
He put himself in a very bad position being near a motel several times with a minor student. This, at the very least, raises questions about his judgement, and quite possible his character.
You appear to know this man, fine. But wait for all the facts to come out before getting on the rooftop and screaming "He's innocent". As I said, he is guilty of very poor judgement.

I am not assuming anything. He was in the company of a minor student. That much is a fact. Poor judgement, and a violation of school policy. So I don't know what you thinking your putting in my face but I'm not buying. There is no slander or liable in the truth. You really want to defend someone who put himself in this position?

Innocent until proven guilty, A principle that requires the government to prove the guilt of a criminal defendant and relieves the defendant of any burden to prove his or her innocence.
The presumption of innocence, an ancient tenet of Criminal Law, is actually a misnomer. According to the U.S. Supreme Court, the presumption of the innocence of a criminal defendant is best described as an assumption of innocence that is indulged in the absence of contrary evidence (Taylor v. Kentucky, 436 U.S. 478, 98 S. Ct. 1930, 56 L. Ed. 2d 468 [1978]). It is not considered evidence of the defendant's innocence, and it does not require that a mandatory inference favorable to the defendant be drawn from any facts in evidence.

Why is everyone saying Comfort Inn on the island. If you go back to the original 1st post on Patch, it says back in July at the Comfort Inn in Fall River on Airport Rd. It states that at that time the F.R. police who went to the scene to investigate a complaint about loud noise did nothing because in MA at 17 you are considered an adult and no assault had taken place. Guaranteed the 1st complaint will be dropped, not that I am taking sides. I believe innocent before proven guilty.

I would say 99.9% of teachers are respectable and would never have an intimate relationship with one or their students who is also a minor, regardless if the age of consent is 16. Mentors don’t meet their students at a motel; people are not stupid the situation speaks for itself. This guy, in my opinion is not only an ABUSER but a PREDATOR. This guy has been trying to hold on to his 'big man on campus, high school' image for years. This story is no surprise. Even if he wasn't having a romantic relationship with this girl, the relationship was innappropriate when they are together at a motel room in the early hours of the morning - there is no disputing that fact. Whether he is convicted in a court of law or not, he will lose his teaching position as he did not follow teacher/student relation rules that come with being a teacher. I knew him - he is a nice guy who can't deal with the fact that he is now middle-aged.
