The state representative, who was arrested earlier this year on an outstanding Massachusetts warrant, failed to collect enough signatures to appear on the November election ballot, reported The Providence Journal on Friday. 

Incumbent state Rep. Dan Gordon (Dist. 71, Little Compton, Portsmouth and Tiverton) submitted 61 names to Portsmouth Town Hall on Friday; however, only 28 of the names were accepted by the Board of Canvassers, reports The Providence Journal. Gordon was required to submit 50 signatures by the Friday deadline. 

Gordon, who announced he was running for a second term, may still run as a write-in candidate, but his name will not appear on the November ballot. 

His opponent, retired Portsmouth police officer Dennis Canario, is now running unopposed. 

Gordon, who planned to run as a Libertarian, became the center of a widespread media inquiry last year after his September 2011 arrest as a fugitive from justice in Massachusetts.
