Nearly 14,000 Powerless in Rhode Island
Almost 14,000 customers are without power and two substations are down in Rhode Island.
Monday's thunderstorms have left 14,000 customers across the state without power and has knocked out two substations, according to the Providence Journal.
As of 12:27 p.m., there were no power outages reported in Portsmouth.
National Grid is still trying to determine the severity of the damage to the two substations – one in Johnston and another in Barrington. The former of the two serves a large section of Providence. Earlier Monday morning, the State House was evacuated after a power surge set off a fire alarm.
The hardest hit area is Barrington, with 4,700 of the town's 6,810 customers are without power. In Providence, 4,265 are powerless with another 1,943 in Johnston and 1,864 in North Providence. Fewer than 50 customers are experiencing power problems in North Kingstown, primarily on Post Road north of Quonset.

Nice thought, but you need backfeed power from the grid in order for the turbine to produce.

Wind turbine 6 month maintenance complete May 2012. What should Portsmouth do if the high school turbine needs major restoration work on the turbine ? Let's say the down time for the turbine , special crane costs, labor and parts costs between 400 and 600 grand. The replacement parts will be reconditioned parts that will be replaced again in a couple of more years . In other words the turbine is no longer economically feasable but at a cost to the taxpayers the town is producing Green Energy .
The turbine is a gear driven turbine .What does the town do ? Knowing the ongoing issues associated with the turbine for the past three years is it going to get any better ?
What do you do -keep paying ?

Bill you are unbelievable you keep wanted to push this Half million dollar repair on us. Fact the the taxpayers of Portsmouth have not paid one penny of property tax toward the wind turbine. Fact the wind turbine has pump over $200,000 in the the town of Portsmouth accounts. All you keep spouting is a work of hypotheticals and supposition. Please take you line of BS to Mattapositt and leave us poor Portamouth fools alone.

Your property taxes will continue to go up in Portsmouth as long as we as a town are so dead set against business. We will do anything to protect Clement's market. Companies don't even want to look at Portsmouth anymore, we are so anti business. Want your taxes to go down quit buying $30,000 police cruisers and parking them on the side of the road to hold a towable radar sign. I am sure there are a great many other things in town that take money out the turbine and Glen manor are the only profit centers for Portsmouth.

Mark D check your numbers the turbine is generating much less revenue than was projected, in fact not enough to carry the debt service. It needs to be knocked down.

The turbine is still projected to break even this year. If you tear it down not only do you still have to pay the debt service you have zero income. Don't listen to bill c from Mattapositt he hates all WTGS goes all over to bitch about them.

The Town Administrator wants to talk about the town wind turbine at the next town council meeting . Do you think it's good news ? The track record for the turbine is not too good. The rest of the world has found out that commercial wind turbines are not economically feasable especially when they are run by public entities. Small towns can't afford the upkeep on a 3 to 5 million dollar wind turbine when the warranty runs out. The Town of Portsmouth is waiting right now to hear back from the gearbox manufacturer . So why is the town waiting on the gearbox manufacturer anyway - One guess !

Bill once again you are reading more than is written. The town concil item it for a maintainace and service contract too be put out to bid. Maybe because the current one doesn't seem to know anything about the turbine. Go back to Mattapositt.

What is your goal Bill it gets torn down, sold? What? Since it hasn't cost us anything yet what'is your end gem what would make you happy. How are you being impacted by Portsmouth's WTG? Your not a resident your not the one who will have to pay the bill if it turns out to be a total failure as you claim. I just don't understand your interest here. YOu hate turbines fine shouldn't your fight be to stop future turbines not the ones that have 13 years debt service still left on them? E shut it down we are on the hook for the whole amount. If and I stress a repair was required of the level that you suggest after just two years then we need to consider cutting our loses. But I for one don't replace the engine in my car before the machanic tells me it blown. Really please let's us know your solution to our turbine problem.

Mark,
Don't waste your time. You and I both know he just headhunts Patch for WTG stories so he can post his lies and mis-information.
Near as I can figure, he lost his tin foil hat and blames turbines.

A news story about a 1.5 MW turbine (same specifications) the same as Portsmouth. A $600,000.00 gearbox repair :
http://www.telegram.com/article/20120514/TOWNNEWS/120519773&TEMPLATE=TOWNPORTAL
"According to Mr. Schoeney, the light department is in debt for $600,000 for repairs to the gear box in one of the town's wind turbine transmission. It remains unclear about who will ultimately be responsible for the bill – the town or the company, Fuhrlander Wind Turbines of Germany. The turbine is expected to be back in service by the end of May and the company will do a diagnosis on the faulty piece of equipment back in Germany. In the meantime, the town has been responsible for seeking supplemental power through groups from other municipal light departments."
