Pitbull, Who Bit 5-Year-Old Girl, To Be Euthanized

A vicious dog hearing was held Friday morning at Town Hall.

A vicious dog hearing concerning the pitbull, who attacked a 5-year-old Portsmouth girl two weeks ago, was held Friday at Town Hall. Featured here is a report of the meeting.

Updated at 10:21 a.m.

The dog's owner has five days to appeal the decision. If he does not appeal, state law says the dog must be euthanized within 30 days of the decision.

This is really a shame. Why in todays world do people have to get themselves a pit bull for a pet. While many pits are fine around kids and others, many are not and put yourself in the position of being the owner of one that goes off is foolish. Just the liability issue should be enough to make one think twice and yes, I know that any dog may bite, but pits do have a reputation.

when the story broke, everyone had something to say, most of it negative. . . .now the dog has been condemmed to death. . . . satisfied?

No, the monster should have been blown to pieces as soon as police arrived and saved the taxpayers some money!

I would rather see the dog giving to a pitbull rehab program than destroyed. This would satisfy all the area residents and potentially save his life if he could be re-trained

Pit bull "rehabilitation" is a joke! Recently, rescue pit bulls in Arkansas, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Tennessee that were "rehabilitated," passed the temperament tests with flying colors and pronounced "safe" for adoption by official pit nutters, attacked their owners (or others - most children) shortly after being adopted! It is a DOG, not a child and killing a bothersome dog is no different than stomping a bothersome roach! You have seriously misplaced values, getreal!

The problem as I see it, and I should say I rescue huskies that have been abused severely and are older and not adoptable for the most part. Control of the animal is the owner’s responsibility, and the bottom line is, that it is an animal and cannot be controlled at times because it is instinct that drives their actions.

Why they do things like this, no one knows or can say why. Same as why a human commits unspeakable acts. As heart breaking as it is to put a domesticated animal down, it must be done when this happens to ensure the safety of others. Yes it is not the dogs fault; it is the nature of the animal. Dogs are like all animals have primal instincts in there DNA. No human can change that. It is sad that it has to be done, but it is also worse to take the chance of risk to another child. I know many will harp on the breed. However, the main problem with this breed is their ability to rip, tear and not release once they lock their jaws. All breeds have problems with humans, and like humans all are individuals. And what causes these actions are anyone’s guess.

Sorry to say the animal should be put down, or it would have to be kenneled in a cage for the rest of its life in order to assure no repeat of the action. That is not good for the families involved or the animal. My opinion on it only.

You raise a very good point. It's unfortunate but this is probably the best resolution.

Tmac,

I believe the lack of comments is out of respect for the people that loved the dog. No matter how logically correct this decision was, the people that loved the animal are hurting and people respect that. It's certainly not the time for "I told you so" comments.

Also, That Patch has this new stupid feature which sends you an email EVERY time someone adds a comment to a thread you've commented on. A thread like this with the potential to generate lots of comments can result in a LOT of useless update emails. I would imagine some of the lack of comments is due to the reluctance to add ones name to the list of people that will be patch spammed.

The people that "loved the dog" should be "hurting" because an innocent child was attacked by a 4-legged demon and suffered a broken arm and undisclosed trauma! To h*ll with the da*m dog! It should have been blown to pieces as soon as police arrived and saw what the monster had done!

As for all those emails you're receiving, if you don't click on "Send me email updates" when you post a comment, you won't receive them!

I am so sorry for your loss. Just remember that for every pit bull hater who does nothing but mouth off from behind their computer screen, there is someone working to rescue and advocate for the breed. Sorry that this happened to you and your daughter!

As with children, all dogs turn out the way they were raised. That being said, there was clearly a problem with this dog. I am not a pit bull hater, in fact my daughter has one and she is the friendliest, most loving and gentle dog you would ever meet. It is not as though this dog just "nipped" the little girl. The dog bit, gripped up and would not let go despite being hit by the owner multiple times with a baseball bat wrapped with barbed wire. It was at that point the gentleman from across the street had to pry the dog's jaws apart in order to free the girl....and was in turn bitten as well. This is not a case of mistaken identity or mistaken account of the events....there were many witnesses who testified at the hearing and they ALL saw the SAME thing.....a dog attacking a child that would not let go. Were YOU there? Whether this dog was a pit bull or a poodle the issue is the same: Vicious dog. It also may shock you to hear that nobody is "hiding" behind their computer screen. I (as well as most of those who commented) would be happy to tell you the same thing to your face. You clearly do not get it....your remarks come from behind a computer screen as well. Is this a case of a pit bull lover "mouthing off from behind a computer screen"? I think so.

Okay Steve, so since you are directing your comments to me, I will respond. Don't take things so literal. No one accused you from hiding behind your computer screen. It was a general statement about all of the pit bull haters who make blanket statements and rant and rave all "pit bull" type dogs should be dead. My comment suggested to ignore these types who do nothing but rant from their computers. When on the other hand you have people who advocate for the breed, are resposnible owners and are hands on with the bully breed types that are salvagable. Was I there? Obviously not, but I have to wonder what happened and was the dog truly vicious if the family was calling for him to be saved. The truth is a child shouldn't be playing tug of war with any large breed dog. Being actively involved in animal rescue I see many bites and more often than not, it's not from a pit bull. By the way, when I comment, I use my name and don't mask my identity. Love and light buddy!

Nobody REALLY knows who ANYONE is on the internet. I have plenty of love for those who deserve it(like my 7 children and 14 grand children). As far as the light goes, anyone who thinks this situation was OK has definitely NOT seen the light.
I agree that often people (mistakenly) label dogs of a certain breed to be "vicious". As I stated in my previous post, it really doesn't matter what breed a dog is, what DOES matter is the dog's behavior.
As a child I played tug of war with my two German Shepherds and was NEVER bitten. I think it still goes back to my original statement regarding the fact that dogs are like kids....it's all about how they are raised. Love MY light.
