Biden, Ryan Go Toe-to-Toe in Debate: RI Insiders Pick Winner
Vice President candidates Joe Biden and Paul Ryan squared off in the VP debate on Thursday, Oct. 11, a week after presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney had their first debate. Here's how Rhode Island Republicans and Democrats reacted.
Both Rhode Island Republicans and Democrats who responded to our survey feel that their candidate walked away with just a slight victory over the other in last night's vice presidential debate.
Joe Biden and Paul Ryan faced off on Thursday, October 11th at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, with ABC News' Martha Raddatz moderating the debate that covered both domestic and foreign policy.
At the conclusion of the debate, Patch surveyed 52 Republicans and 51 Democrats, asking who they thought won the debate. Sixty-two percent of the Republicans who responded said Ryan won by only a slight margin, while 23% said he won by a large margin. Only 15% were neutral.
When we asked the Democrats the same question 67% responded that Biden won the debate by a slim margin, while 33% thought Biden won the debate by a wide margin.
Our next survey question asked both Democrats and Republicans who they thought the national media would declare the winner. One-hundred percent of the Democrats surveyed thought the media would declare Biden the winner by only a slim margin.
Forty-six percent of the Republicans who responded to our survey felt Paul Ryan would be declared the winner by only a slim margin as well. However 23% of the Republicans felt that Joe Biden would be declared the winner by the national media by only a slim margin. Thirty-one percent of the Republicans surveyed said they were neutral on this question.
Republicans who responded to our survey were not so confident that Paul Ryan's performance would help Mitt Romney get more votes in the Ocean State. When we asked that question only 31% strongly agreed that Ryan's performance would help get the Romney-Ryan ticket more votes in Rhode Island. Thirty-nine percent said they were neutral on whether Ryan's performance would help get more votes. The rest of the Republicans were split with 15% somewhat agreeing that Ryan helped the ticket last night, while the other 15% somewhat disagree that his performance would get more votes in Rhode Island.
When we turned to Democrats asking if Joe Biden's performance Thursday would help get President Obama more votes in Rhode Island, 100% only somewhat agreed that the Vice President's performance would help with votes.
--------------------
Our surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population but rather an effort to listen to a swatch of influential local Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders and elected officials in Rhode Island. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in surveys, although not all responded to this week's questions.
Patch will be conducting Red Rhody and Blue Rhody surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and liberals on the ground in Rhode Island. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in our surveys that lasts just a few minutes, please email Rick Couto, Regional Editor at rick.couto@patch.com.

Let’s see… who won?
Mr. Biden’s big white teeth?
Or the wiggle in his talk?
Or the giggle in his talk?
Man, he acts so funny.
Wants to spend your money.
He's distracting. That makes it harder to concentrate on his lies & lack of details.
No details from Biden on Obamacare cost, or jobs lost (businesses don’t want to hire & be subject to Obamacare). No domestic economic plan. Biden save Medicare? How? Mr. Obama said by reducing health care costs, but Obamacare will INCREASE costs even more than over the past 4 years.
Troops out in 2014-no matter what?! Irresponsible statements like that jeopardize US security.
There’s more (e.g., Biden obviously doesn’t understand Supply Side Economics),
but the worst, worst, worst thing of all…
the biggest, baddest lies of all?
Libya.
Biden expects us to believe his malarkey that the Obama administration did not know that the Americans at the US Embassy in Libya requested more security. (Liar.)
Then, Biden said, “The military says we need a smaller, leaner army.”
Biden spoke confidently about the Iran nuclear threat – he seems to think he knows more about Iran’s timetable than anyone else does.
So Mr. Biden thinks he has his finger on the pulse of the US Army, the US military needs and Iran’s nuclear-weapon-development timetable,
but he had NO IDEA that the US Embassy in Libya needed some security?
We don't believe him.
“Who do you trust?”
Not Obama & Biden.

Manifold,
Would you like to talk about the Republican lead House that held up additional security funds for our embassies?
As to the claim of "smaller, leaner Army", this was based on the recommendation of the Joint Chiefs...So, I think they are a little more credible than you are.
Your claim about "ObamaCare" raising healthcare costs holds no water. Cite evidence of your claim, and if you can't, then stop lying.
And if you really want to bring up irresponsible statements...Here's one for ya..."MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" , Hahahahahaha

Two sides to every story:
"House Republicans cut the administration’s request for embassy security funding by $128 million in fiscal 2011 and $331 million in fiscal 2012....Last year, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned that Republicans’ proposed cuts to her department would be “detrimental to America’s national security” — a charge Republicans rejected. Ryan, Issa and other House Republicans voted for an amendment in 2009 to cut $1.2 billion from State operations, including funds for 300 more diplomatic security positions. Under Ryan’s budget, non-defense discretionary spending, which includes State Department funding, would be slashed nearly 20 percent in 2014, which would translate to more than $400 million in additional cuts to embassy security." http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2012/10/breaking-protecting-our-embassies-costs-money

@OldTownie: I use to say: “The mission was accomplished when Exxon/Mobile got 80% of the second largest oil field in Iraq” but I saw today that the Iraqi government is in the process of tossing Exxon out and offering that contract to a state run Russian Oil Company. http://news.yahoo.com/iraq-wants-russians-replace-exxon-west-qurna-report-124254148--finance.html I also suspect if we tangle with Syria or Iran we will again be fighting the Iraqis (all Shiite governments). I guess before we can say "Mission Accomplished" we need to know what was the mission. IF it was to create an unstable Middle East so as to drive up the price of oil so energy companies can make obscene profits, I suspect we have succeeded in accomplishing that..

I agree that Biden would have access to classified information and maybe "more of it". Now to say the info was mismanaged could be inferred easily since they stumbled for a week. If the information they received from their intellegence sources (I suspect that's what you meant by "security agencies") was bad then I expect there to be some openings in the upper level of the respective agency (s) of bad info. In the point of how much classified info Biden knows though I agree it's more than we do at any given moment. The Executive branch staff gets a dailey update brief alternately called (BUB for battle update brief) or TUB for tactical update brief) usually during one of the first three in the a.m.

Typical right wing nonsense not giving the dems any credit. When Romney was interrupting Obama and the moderater that was just fine by the repubs. Biden like a lot of other people just could not take the lies coming out of Ryan's mouth. Republicans are going to balance the budget by lowering tax rates and not cut anything from the military, cut medicare, cut "loopholes". Like Biden told him its impossible. Those "loopholes" are are the tax credits the middle class need. The loopholes for the upperclass, they wont make as much on the interest from their millions, and the loopholes wont be touching their offshore accounts that the gov. cant tax. The right wing wants "less" gov but they are going to force women to not have rights to their own bodies. They will put new judges in the supreme court to over turn roe vs wade. Biden won and the right wingers dont like giving any kind of credit to the left. Thats why its hard to get anything accomplished in washigton.

Mr. Obama pretended to be interrupted.
Mr. Obama actually got more time than Romney (about 4 minutes) yet said about 9% fewer words.
Mr. Obama was trying to run the clock.
When Mr. Romney started to speak, and well before Romney even had his two minutes, Obama (the actor) would pretend to open his mouth (as though his time was being cut into when it was not), and Obama would raise his index finger and point as though he was about to speak or to indicate to the moderator that it was his turn - when it was not.
Mr. Romney was careful to show very little reaction to the President's antics. "Careful" because not in a million years could any Republican "get away with" the ridiculous stunts that the Democrats pull during debates (laughing, fake smiles, acting, acting, acting...).
That's no way for the Vice President and the President to act during re-election campaign debates.

Since you asked:
"Social Security is not Self Funded,"
Yes, it is.
Social Security’s revenue was about $800 billion in 2010. The program has three sources of income. The largest source comes from workers and employers who contribute 6.2% each on wages up to $106,800 a year; this raises about 80% of the total.
"with the baby boomers retiring they are facing a deficit."
The trustees say that even if Congress does absolutely nothing, in 2033 there still will be money to pay about 75% of currently scheduled benefits.
And by the way, despite facing the worst economic conditions in its history, the program ran a surplus of $69 billion last year, increasing the trust fund to nearly $2.7 trillion.
LA Times April 25, 2012|Michael Hiltzik
I fail to see how the Ryan/Romney plan of privatizing these assets is anything more than a violation of the original charter for creating Social Security. Considering what happened to my 401k, that sounds prescient.
According to CNN, the Affordable Health care act actively extends the period in which Congress must act to rescue Medicare - even without Enron style accounting
The Ryan/Romney plan? Things come to a head in 2016 - again with the promise
of private enterprise saving the program. That's predation on taxpayer money,
and the underlying premise of this ticket - wealth transfer from the young
to the old to the Insurance carriers.

Biden is an expert on foreign policy (which is why Obama tapped him in '08) and made Ryan look as inexperienced as he actually is in that department - all he had was talking points fed to him by Bush's old team and we all see how that turned out.
Check Factcheck.org for their assessment of what was said...While Biden may have exaggerated on a couple of points Ryan was just regurgitating the same BS that has been fact checked as false on several occasions.

I'm so TIRED of everyone who disagrees with you (or your ilk) being cast off as mindless idiots because we don't agree. I am voting for Obama (and any Democrat, frankly, in this political environment) because A)I am a woman, B), I travel the world for my job and have seen first hand what Bush and now Obama have done in regards to our standing in the world. C) because I do not believe for ONE MINUTE the Romney/Ryan plan for getting us out of the deficit is anything but more of the same that got us into this mess to begin with, part because I don't agree with trickle down, part because I believe the supposition of huge growth because of it is a big one, and that D) that plan benefits no one but big business with hopes they are magnanimous enough to let it trickle down. Not to mention that I am on opposite sides on almost all social issues, since E) I am a firm believer in separation of church and state.
SO, I do take the time to research, I actually immerse myself in both sides and still I come up with a different opinion than you. It is possible to be informed and not agree with your viewpoint. That attitude is what is wrong with politics in this country today. Stop being part of the problem.

OldTownie, there are numerous websites that already do that. Though to placate you, I chose a subject and did it myself.
Luckily, there's one I already did the research for. If you look at this http://factcheck.org/2012/10/veep-debate-violations/ and go to the first section, entitled, "Small Business Smackdown", you'll see that they try to spin it to make it look like Ryan is exaggerating and that what the Chamber of Commerce states is only applicable if the tax increase goes to further government spending and not paying down the deficit... as if paying down the deficit somehow isn't government spending.
You can see my findings on the matter here... http://bristol-warren.patch.com/blog_posts/ask-a-conservative-bush-tax-cuts (you'll find further analysis in the comments below the post)
Factcheck.org tries to distort the facts by claiming that Ryan is "including in his estimate a lot of income from some very large businesses.", which... as you can see from my own blog, is not true. What determines whether a business can file under "S-Corp" rules is not the amount of money they make... it's how many people they employ... and as you can see from my blog, S-Corps and partnerships (which don't have a size quota) employed, as of when I wrote the blog, 52.6 million Americans.
Factcheck.org is deliberately playing down that fact in order to get a dig on Ryan and they do so by using how much they make, not how many people they employ.

Biden is an expert on foreign policy you say. Did not know that. Certainly would not have guessed that.
See below for more from the so-called "expert" (and if that's "expertise" we can only imagine what it would take for the Obama administration to recongize that something is a "failure". Oh, wait... look how long it took Obama to recognize & finally admit that his debate performance was a failure.)
Biden would have us believe that only he knows the real timetable for Iran's nuclear development (uh...trust me, he says, they don't have a container big enough to put it in or some such nonsense)
yet, at the same time, this current administration also wants us to believe that they still cannot figure out - a month after the fact - what the heck happened over there at the US Embassy in Libya?

Biden sat on the Committee on Foreign Relations, at times as it's chair, and met with over a hundred foreign leaders during his years there. Since becoming VP he has made regular trips to Iraq and is directly involved with foreign policy decisions with Obama and Clinton. I'd say that gives him a hell of a lot more experience than either Romney or Ryan.
I am sure that Biden (and Obama) are privy to much more information than Romney/Ryan in regards to what Iran does or doesn't have in terms of nuclear material. And I'm sure that information isn't meant to be general knowledge so that also means you don't know either. And I respect Obama for not being bullied by Bibi or anyone else into war. There are already crippling sanctions in place. Are you suggesting we go to war with Iran over supposed WMD (sound familiar?)
I have no problem believing they are still trying to get answers about Libya. I also have no problem with them taking their time to find the answers instead of jumping the gun and holding hasty press conferences like Romney did.
Electing Romney would amount to a continuation of Bush's foreign policy - he has zero experience himself and is using the same advisers Bush did. I do not think a resumption of Bush's foreign policy is in our country's best interests. I do not believe Romney's plan for the economy adds up, and do not believe it benefits anyone but people like him.
So I definitely trust Obama. Since you asked.

I can tell you after 30+ years in the military I've spent some time in North Africa and the State Dept is responsible for all charge d' affaires and they're supposed to do a pre deplyment site survey before occupying any building including the geo-political climate. The intell guys do the pattern analysis wheel and determine what we would call a threat level or FP CON (force protection condition) then assign a level. This would be done by military assets that were under operational control (OPCON) to the state dept. Even if after the site survey and whell pattern showed at it's lowest level..it would not have been as low as using to former Navy - now contractors plus their green on blue shooters.

I'm starting to thinkyour military experience is not what you would lead us to believe.
"Green on Blue" is a direct reference to Afghan Army soldiers shooting Coalition Security forces. It has nothing to do with Libya. And you can be sure that no "Blue on Green shooters" are working with our defence contractors.

Leave RI, I'm currently in. The pattern analysis wheel and the FP Con stuff is pretty accurate but I'm confused as to what you mean with the "green on blue" stuff as well. Is that an old term because as OldTownie indicated, it does indeed reference indigenous (not necessarily Afghan, though when talked about in the press that's what they mean) forces attacking our own forces. Indigenous is green and US forces are Blue. (based on our Operational Terms and Symbols template... though at times US forces are black)

All you need to know is Ryan admits that he thinks when a women gets raped she can magically make her body not get pregnant. Even though the republicans say they want less government they want the government to make the choice for women on what to do with her body.
Bryan Palumbo

Please cite a source where Ryan states that. If not, then you are a liar and no one should pay you any attention.
Also, anti-abortion advocates are against it because they believe it's murder. Do you feel that murder shouldn't be illegal because "it's the government taking someone's choice away from them"?

Bryan Palumbo
11:10 pm on Friday, October 12, 2012
Mine too... It's because of two reasons on my part (I can't speak for Romney).
http://bristol-warren.patch.com/blog_posts/ask-a-conservative-social-issues
1) The woman does not have a choice as to whether to engage in sexual relations. In all other cases she does (I include incest... or molestation in that, as well).
2) The woman's psychological health is at stake... much like the stance of allowing abortion in the case of "life of the mother' being okay.
These categories, where abortion is allowed are much like how we think it's acceptable to kill someone in self defense, or the defense of a loved one.
Bryan Palumbo
11:15 pm on Friday, October 12, 2012
Oh, that could read funny. I mean that incest or molestation would be considered as "not having a choice" obviously.
Joe
9:36 am on Saturday, October 13, 2012
So buy that rational. Not mine, an innocent life can be taken because it MIGHT (but I agree probably will) cause some one psychological pain. The self defense analogy if flawed. The women is not going to die from having the baby more so than any other normal birth. The point I am trying to make is some who says that abortion is killing but supports it after a rape is then saying they support killing an innocent person when some ones else s mental health will be under large stress. But I see that view as a contradiction of their beliefs.
Bryan Palumbo
2:55 pm on Saturday, October 13, 2012
I don't think there's any question that carrying a baby that was the product of rape, full term would result in harm to the mother... ie. health of the mother. It also means that in those cases, the mother did not have the choice as to whether to take part in an activity that may get her pregnant. Where as in all other cases, she does.
I used to be against it in the case of rape as well, but then I thought of the above circumstances. It isn't an easy stance to take and I may change my mind on it in the future.

I'd like to put all the political rhetoric aside, and ask a simple question. Why would anyone that was a member of the US armed services, past, present or thinking about making the military a career comming out of school, their families or their friends ever even consider voting for Obama after what has taken place in Libya? Obama left the Ambassador and 3 others helpless and costing them their lives, after refusing requests for additional security! If that in and of itself isn't bad enough, they then proceed to try cover it up blaming it on a u tube video. Think what must be going through the minds of all the active men and women currently serving to protect us each and every day? Obama is a miserable failure and in my opinion an embarassment. Because of him we are considered weak and apologetic around the world. @Cranston Voter: But they do: http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2011/09/barack-obama-ron-paul-military-cash.html I guess for the same reasons an "average Joe/Jane" would vote for a Republican. As for Lybia (in case you missed it): "House Republicans cut the administration’s request for embassy security funding by $128 million in fiscal 2011 and $331 million in fiscal 2012....Last year, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned that Republicans’ proposed cuts to her department would be “detrimental to America’s national security” — a charge Republicans rejected.

OldTownie, there's no such thing as a "30 year ground pounder".
I'll use my 20 year career as an example. For the first 10 years, it was my job to be with an infantry company/battalion/brigade and direct their artillery, mortar and air support. It was at that battalion and brigade level that you start getting involved in planning, analysis, decision making all according to the policies set forth by higher.. higher includes your commander all the way up to the President.
It doesn't take long to figure out which policies are good, which could be better and which outright suck. Sometimes that isn't right away, sometimes it's when you see the results that you figure out which is what.
For instance, Bush disbanding the Iraqi Army... at the time it was done made sense. We had just fought them... later on, I saw that it was a mistake. And BTW, the Iraqi people did welcome us with open arms. There were some places I was in where people were lined up on the side of the road cheering us as we drove past them. I felt like I was in a parade.
The second ten years of my career was different. Then I was more involved in the decision making, making the policies, ect.
This all depends on what job you have. You can be an Infantry Captain and you are simply in charge of your Company's area... or you can be an Staff Sergeant and be making decisions for whole Provinces.
It also depends on your service as well. An Admiral has less say so than a LCpl in the Marines, for instance.

Let's review the 3 lies that Biden told last night:
1.) Libya - "we have no idea they would want to attack us on 9/11 in Bengzai".
2.) The Iraq War - “I was there, I voted against them,” Biden continued. “I said, no, we can’t afford that.”
Then Sen. Biden voted for the Afghanistan resolution on Sept. 14, 2001 which authorized “the use of United States Armed Forces against those responsible for the recent attacks launched against the United States.”
3.) HHS Mandate - "With regard to the assault on the Catholic Church, let me make it absolutely clear. No religious institution—Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital—none has to either refer contraception, none has to pay for contraception, none has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any insurance policy they provide. That is a fact. That is a fact.”
The US Catholic Bishops response: This is not a fact. The HHS mandate contains a narrow, four-part exemption for certain “religious employers.” That exemption was made final in February and does not extend to “Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital,” or any other religious charity that offers its services to all, regardless of the faith of those served.

If we continue with these 2 branches of the Corporate/Banking Party there will be little change in the way the country is run. As long as the criminal "Plutocracy" can keep us fighting one another over trivia, they can be sure we will not be looking at them. The banking criminal cartel gambled away their money and then extorted monies from us. Did they use our money to help create jobs? Did they use our money to relieve those facing foreclosure on their homes caused by the "liar loans" these criminals wrote? Did they use our money to reimburse those who lost their life savings because these criminals had fraudulently packaged up this "junk status" debt as AAA and sold it to pension fund managers, cities, towns, and States who thought it was a save investment because of the AAA rating? So, what did they do with it? Some of it they used to give themselves big bonuses and the rest to continue gambling in the derivatives "Casino". Not only does the Corporate/Banking Criminal Plutocracy own the Executive Branch and Legislative Branch of Government but, as per the January 2010 "Citizens United" ruling, they also own the Supreme Court. If ANY dare rise up against these criminals they threaten a collapse of the economy because they control over $500 Trillion. No truer words spoken by Obama than: "I think that I've learned some lessons over the last four years and the most important lesson I've learned is that you can't change Washington from the inside." Now if someone says Bush is responsible for lost money in Iraq I also agree since the president is responsible for the actions of his staff and below..that's just called vicarious liability..if that's the position then in that same thought train obama is responsible for the actions of the state department...if you don't follow that..then I guess you have to leave the state dept itself out to dry and own the blame. mere facts. The parallels between faith-based ideologies are striking:
Tea Party traits and beliefs that make them the Republicans In Name Only:
Ideological purity
Compromise as weakness
A fundamentalist belief in scriptural literalism
Denying science
Unmoved by facts
Undeterred by new information
A hostile fear of progress
A demonization of education
A need to control women’s bodies
Severe xenophobia
Tribal mentality
Intolerance of dissent
Pathological hatred of US government

"Ideological purity" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJFFpC4PmDw (watch the whole thing... it's you to a T)
"Compromise as weakness" - This is a funny one because you can see all the compromise with how Obama pushed his Health Care take over without even talking to the GOP. Or the whole "Accept our tax plan or nothing".
"A fundamentalist belief in scriptural literalism" - Most Conservatives aren't religious (like me - I'm a Deist, I don't have a religion)
"Denying Science" - Can I get one citation of Conservatives or Tea Party members denying science please? I know you're going to bring up "Climate Change" or is that "Global Warming" or is it "Global Cooling"? Since it's science there's no reason why you'd have to keep changing what's happening, right?
"Unmoved by facts" - Like the facts I showed you above about how SS and Medicare is going to go bankrupt and then you abruptly stopped responding to me?
"Undeterred by new information" - such as?
"A hostile fear of progress" - Because making up rights like, "choosing" and "free stuff" is progress, right?
"A demonization of education" - Such as?

While I'm up on my soapbox: these criminals are also slowly taking over State governments through organizations like ALEC in which the Corporate/Banking Criminals write legislation to be given to their "stooges" (elected members of State Government + also ALEC members) to introduce as State legislation. See: http://www.alecexposed.org/wiki/ALEC_Exposed (Click on RI + see who are members in this State) Now the criminals are trying to pass legislation denying States the right to counteract any rulings by FDA which they also control. We can see their influence here in RI because, although several bills have been introduced requiring labeling of genetically modified foods (GMOs), none have made it out of committee even though MANY independent studies indicate that GMOs can cause cancer and organ damage. See: http://www.organicauthority.com/blog/organic/19-studies-suggest-link-between-gmo-foods-and-serious-organ-damage/ I have to wonder why our State and Federal Legislators, all having loved ones who eat GMOs daily, will not enact legislation to at least require labeling of these products. One Portsmouth legislator told me "all bills will remain in Committee for this session due to the pending elections" but didn't respond when I asked him why a similar bill never made it out of committee LAST year. A more honest local Representative said the bills don't make it out of committee “because of corporate lobbying”. Until we deal with this we will continue to be their "guinea pigs"

Not only that one of our DIPLOMATS was just killed and the lies and cover up coming out of this white house are unprecedented. Biden just got on national TV and said that he and Obama didn't know that Ambassador Stevens and his people were asking for more security because they knew their lives were in jeopardy. Clearly the state department contradicts that statement so either Biden is lying through his teeth or if he and Obama didn't know then they are incapable of handling the jobs they have and should be removed from office. Biden lost Clintonesquely.
Biden had to go in there and be an intentional, huge, silly distraction.
So no one would notice that big fat lie about Libya.
Biden would swear that “we” did not have a security request from that US Embassy.
And then the White House Press Secretary would quickly define “we”.
Done & done.
Speaking of funny definitions, asking for “12 guards plus military trainers” to defend the US Embassy in Libya is being defined by the administration as tantamount to asking for the “the sun, the moon and the stars”:
“In a House hearing on Wednesday, a State Department employee, Eric Nordstrom, said he told his superiors twice that the embassy mission needed more armed security… In a July cable, he said he wanted 12 guards plus military trainers…Beyond putting his assessment on paper, Nordstrom made that request verbally to a State Department officer in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. ‘His response to that was, 'You're asking for the sun, moon, and the stars,' Nordstrom said.’”

Asking for “12 guards plus military trainers” to defend the US Embassy in Libya is defined as asking for the “the sun, the moon and the stars”?

The Obama administration has been slow to submit a budget, three times -
98 days in fiscal 2009, seven days in both fiscal 2012 and 2013.
It should be noted that the fiscal deadline in 2009 came in the midst of TARP and the Auto bailouts.
http://budget.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=276880
The budgets are being used to gain political talking points in Congressional races,
and have been subjected to "all or nothing" requirements.
Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), who is retiring this year and voted no on all five budgets, lamented that leaders only agreed to hold up-or-down votes with no opportunity for unlimited debate or amendments.
“It’s a slap-dash method of legislating,” she told POLITICO.

There are so many misdirections and fallacies in the OP that there's barely space to cover them all...
Gas prices are directly related to demand, and largely outside the influence of policy making - for any President. Why have prices gone up so much?
We're not the only ones buying the stuff from the major producers.
Why are Americans justifiably peeved at this? We're subsidizing the producers by keeping boots on the ground in the Arabian peninsula and policing the seas.
http://gaspricesexplained.org/
The tax rate is the lowest in 30 years, which does nothing to address the debt -
Tax Freedom day has come sooner over the past few years (it was April 24th as recently as 2007) and as early as April 8th in the stimulus year.
What's missing is the understanding that you have to pay, eventually.
Youth unemployment is not surprising, considering Unemployment benefits
are based on the highest Quarter earnings of the prior year.
http://www.dlt.ri.gov/lmi/faq/rate.htm
Younger people tend to be entry level staff, and are less expensive to insure.
High rates of unemployment also depress wages and keep Union organization
at bay, both useful in suppressing wages.
"Since you have "an advanced degree in statistics", you can tell us why she is off..."
I'll take a stab at that, it's the intentional parsing of data to support a point,
rather than illuminate a problem - the way drunks use lamp posts.
That's both obdurate and uninformed, BP.

Great job using citations, Naome. You're right that the budget was passed late for 2009 because of the various bailouts. Otherwise the 2009 budget would have been signed by Bush before October of 2008... but instead was signed by Obama in May 2009.
Olympia Snowe is a Liberal... just fyi.
Naome, Obama has increased the deficit over a trillion dollars for each year he's been in office. If you look at this citation... http://home.adelphi.edu/sbloch/deficits.html
You will see that once the Democrats took over congress in 2007, our deficit spending DOUBLED. Then, when Obama took office with that same congress, they added another 50+% to that. In real numbers... with a GOP President and House we were adding $500 billion dollars a year (totally unacceptable), Democrats took over the Congress... then it became $1 trillion... Obama took office... $1.8 trillion...
The average deficit spending under Obama is $1.45 Trillion a year.
Romney's plan is to achieve a balanced budget over 10 years. You may agree or disagree with his plan, but at least he has one. http://www.mittromney.com/issues/fiscal-responsibility and http://www.mittromney.com/issues/spending
On the reverse, Obama's plan is to increase spending by 4% a year... Increasing spending while already in a deficit is foolish at best. http://www.forbes.com/sites/peterferrara/2012/06/28/obamanomics-economics-for-dummies/

I'm unsure of what position you are staking with the Obama budget and the Romney proposal - one is a working document, up for review in a hostile budget committee, the other a conservative wish list written largely as fiction.
Robert D. Reischauer, a former head of the Congressional Budget Office, expressed the consensus of many independent analysts, saying, “The proposals by Romney are politically unachievable, and the president’s proposals, while achievable, are too modest.” Jackie Calmes NYT September 25, 2012
The core of the problem is inter-generational transfers of wealth, primarily in the form of Medicare payments. Taking this program into the public sector merely transfers the bill from the Insurer to the Elderly to the young people holding the bill.
Neither party shows any inclination to threaten the support of these voters.
I believe the Obama administration has been stalling for time, as has every administration since Nixon. It's just another of the crises that have come to a head
under Obama's watch - this one has been orchestrated by Congressional opposition to unseat the incumbent.

"lol--You're out of your highly educated mind"
Advocating for the most powerful interests in this country to further consolidate
their position is what we dissenters consider insane.

Where did you hear that rubbish? I'm pretty interested to know because I could use the money they'd owe me for 16 years of internet access.

Tea Party is the answer to all your disappointments? I don't know that I've ever met a Tea Party person--I don't label nor do I vote on labels
This article focus is on the presidential debates and not Congress? The 2010 elections voiced the people's Congressional choices.
"need to get the lobbying class out of the back hallways"
you talking about the "back hallways" of Congress when you speak of lobbyists? Surely you know Obama's popular lie of keeping them out of the White House on his watch---by appointing 17 former lobbyists to his administration – just in his first two weeks in office. and FYI--they don't currently allow lobbyists at the WH--they do however re-title them & fill the visitor logs with them...GPEs-"government process engineers" They enter through the front door and not the back
don't we all feel so much better now?

"Tea Party is the answer to all your disappointments?"
Hardly, I merely point out the parallels in the documented Tea Party stance and
the more egregious flights of fancy presented here as reason.
"I don't know that I've ever met a Tea Party person--I don't label nor do I vote on labels." Congratulations? You should be able to recognize them, they'll be draped in a flag, or as the town crier, or most often - as the voice of "fiscal responsibility" attacking the NEA or local school funding (as in Tiverton).
"Surely you know Obama's popular lie of keeping them out of the White House on his watch---by appointing 17 former lobbyists to his administration..." one of the many reasons I'm no fan of Obama.
Let's get something straight - I chime in when I hear some SWAG tossed off as if it were proven fact, or the denigration of anyone that dares consider Ayn Rand
a hack author of fantasy as a Socialist.

It must horrify you to know that there are educated people who don't believe a word that comes out of Mitt Romney.
I get my news from The Economist katie - presumption is the preface to becoming a prat. Get this straight, you clueless twit, there's a generational divide in this country that is being exploited by the money behind the scenes.
You lot are fighting to keep an outsized share of that subsidy, my kids are footing your bills - some code of personal responsibility you practice, buttercup.

statistics refers to the interpretation of data. we have analysts so lay people do not draw faulty conclusions. all variables must be considered. romney/ryan draw faulty conclusions and count on exploiting people like good year, margaret and leave ri to get votes. it is working. FYI: i am voting mostly republican in the local ga and senate races. i am not against republicans, but i am against taking data and drawing faulty conclusions in order to dupe the citizens.

The original discussion you piped in on was referring to my views on the state of important issues to ME--my voting index card (electronic of course)
the question to you from BP? was:
The last budget passed was May of 2009.
When Obama submitted his last budget, he received zero votes in the House and Senate... not even 1 vote from a Democrat.
He has not come out with a plan to balance the budget, just to have it grow more slowly... yet we are already spending over a trillion dollars more than we take in.

You might consider reading commentary from other posters, Margaret.
These concerns were raised, and addressed, above.
The essence is that your presumption - Obama at the bottom of it all - is bogus.
It makes sense that people want a tidy summation of all problems with a simple diagnostic test and a surgical solution. In a herd so large as the US Government, with so many influencing the outcome through campaign financing, the
disease isn't localized, it's a parasitic infection.
Treatment of something like this usually involves quarantine and culling the herd.
I said it above, and will say it again, your rage has been misdirected by the same
rustlers that stole into the paddock and poisoned the well.
You're getting used.

@ Ken Battle Never said I had the qualifications to be pres. but I do have a right to my opinion and free speech. That is unless president Obama decides to take it away from me by "Executive Order". You are getting desperate like many others as we count down to election day. Obama has proven that he will say or do anything even lie, to keep his tenancy in the White House. He and the 1st Lady must go to bed at night laughing at people thinking, how can we still be in this race after my dismal record on everything! Stay tuned for the next debate. The pressure is on and he has no teleprompter, no record to run on, and no plan to get us out of the mess we are in. He had his chance (to at least make a dent) in the problems he knew he was getting into when he took office. He not only hasn't made a dent, he has exacerbated the situation. "Fired Up, Ready to Go" yup straight into the toilet if he wins!

"He and the 1st Lady must go to bed at night laughing at people thinking, how can we still be in this race after my dismal record on everything!"
More likely, he goes to bed each night thinking,
"At least we're not in Rhode Island."
" Never said I had the qualifications to be pres. but I do have a right to my opinion and free speech." And we're within our rights to abuse cranks in public.
"...no plan to get us out of the mess we are in. He had his chance (to at least make a dent) in the problems he knew he was getting into when he took office."
Every meaningful piece of legislation proposed has gone down in committee.
This has been at the direction of the Congressional GOP.

That's the only beef in your swill Mags - you make outrageous claims that you can't back up. It's like trying to discuss architecture with a brick.

Enough national politics. TIme to talk about something we can influence.
Local politics. Did you hear the latest?
How 'bout Sheldon Whitehouse & Jack Reed declaring that they are - guess what - going to ask the Feds (DeMarc) to write down some loans. Only - guess what - the Democrats in Congress already asked for that in April 2012 and - guess what - this HUGE study was done & they found out that's it's not really a good idea (see comments to the ProJo article). And so DeMarco said "No".
But Sheldon & Jack apparently DON'T KNOW that they MISSED THE BOAT on all this! Or maybe they think we don't know & they're trying to fool us?
Either way, it's doesn't look good for them to do this to us.
See ProJo article entitlled, "RI Senator Whitehouse backs loan write-downs".
