Gas Prices Surge 28 Cents in a Month; Are you Driving Less?

The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline has gone up to $3.79 in Rhode Island over the past month.

Gas prices in Portsmouth continue their upward march, with prices reaching the highest point ever in February and up more than a quarter in the past month.

AAA Southern New England said its survey of prices in Rhode Island on Monday found self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $3.79 per gallon, five cents higher than a week ago and up 28 cents over the past month.

The national average for self serve unleaded of $3.73 and a year ago at this time the Rhode Island average price was $3.68.

AAA offers a new gas saving tip each week with its gas price updates. This week, the AAA suggests drivers accelerate smoothly and brake gradually - it’s safer, uses less gas and reduces brake wear.

How can one not notice the steep and rapid increase in fuel prices. Aquidneck Island consistently has higher fuel prices than the mainland, and I wait until off-Island to buy fuel. I refuse to trade at BP or Exxon/Mobil, anywhere given their corporate history and practices of clandestine environmental tragedies.

When are we going to start to rifine more fuel and stop listening to the green lies? Fuel should be like it was when Bush left office $1.69 or less but then again Huesien promised he would make energy prices skyrocket and now that he is in his last term he will set things loose. They are going to come for more and more of our money taxes and government regulatory fees are the main problem and the second problem is the Fed printing to much money and devalueing the dollar. Notice latly how product size is getting smaller and prices are going up. Lets get rid of all the regulations on fuel and make us less dependant on the middle east and other countries who are producing fuel like crazy and laughing at us.

We are, in fact, producing more fuel than ever before. The increase in the price of gasoline has nothing to do with what Mike claims. The facts are that there has been more fuel production in the U.S. since Barack Obama took office. We now are less dependent on foreign oil than ever before. I'm from Texas and am involved in the energy business.. There are fewer regulations, now, than even under the oil presidency of Bush. There is, in fact, less production in the Middle East than ever in recent history. Part of that is caused by economic decisions of the foreign producers and part from political turmoil abroad. Most of the cost of fuel is not in fees. Demand, oil profits are all part of the ever-changing equation. The President has upset environmentalists because he has been very friendly to oil companies, opening up more federal lands to production than ever and supporting offshore drilling beyond the Bush years. What is needed is a strong energy policy that includes significant alternative energy sources that will eventually replace the vagaries of the fossil fuel industry. If we're going to discuss national energy policy, let's, at least, discuss facts and not attempt to falsely accuse and disparage someone disliked for other reasons.
