Garage Fire Blamed on Cigarette

Portsmouth firefighters say a cigarette is to blame for a garage fire Wednesday afternoon.

A cigarette is believed to be the cause of a garage fire discovered Wednesday afternoon on Turnpike Avenue.

Portsmouth Fire Capt. Michael O'Brien says the cause of the fire at 270 Turnpike Ave. was due to "careless discarding of smoking materials."

The smoking materials was a cigarette, O'Brien said.

Firefighters responded around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to the one-story house on Turnpike Avenue and quickly extinguished the flames in the garage. The fire appeared to have been burning for "some time," O'Brien said.

No injuries were reported. The house sustained no major damage, but the garage sustained structural damage.

Only a cat, named Brownie, and a dog, a husky-golden retriever mix named Maggie, were home at the time of the fire. Both animals were uninjured.

Personnel from the Naval Station Newport Fire Department manned the Portsmouth station during the response.

I hate to sound rude but can our own personnel "man" the station while handling a small fire?

Today the Portsmouth FD sent an engine to cover a Tiverton station while they were at an accident and a Navy engine covered the Portsmouth station I don't know if anybody covered the Navy station. Maybe Middletown covered the Navy while Newport covered Middletown. Then Jamestown would have to cover Newport while N. Kingstown covered Jamestown Ect. Ect. Ect.
