Fill This Empty Portsmouth Storefront: Shell Gas Station

What kind of business do you think should go here?

While some businesses in Portsmouth have been around for "as long as you can remember," some have closed their doors or simply moved to a new location.

The former Shell Gas Station on East Main Road, next to The Portsmouth Shop, was partially demolished a year ago.

While the tanks were removed from the site, the white gas station building still remains vacant.

We want to know what businesses you think would thrive in that location. What type of business would you like to inhabit this empty storefront?

How about an Almacs (I mean a Shaw's)? Clements could use the competition since their store needs a clean up and the prices are kind of high.

How about a Brewed Awakenings. They took a similar building on Pontiac Ave in Cranston and turned it into an awesome coffee and sandwich shop. Tony Simonelli

Clements needs a cleanup??? What are you blind?! That us the cleanest grocery store around and they are always making modern improvements. Nice try East Side! If you din't like their minimal higher prices then don't shop there!!!! They do a lot more for Portsmouth than S&S and Shaw's combined!

Clements is a great company and neighbor. However to say that it does more than Stop & Shop and Shaw's combined is a stretch. Neither one of those companies have a store in Portsmouth however I never heard of Stop & shop not helping out Portsmouth organizations. Plus they have great programs to help out local causes. In fact this past school year Hathaway Elementary received the highest donation in the state from their A+ bonus bucks program in excess of $6,000. Last year Stop and SHop and their customers donated over $2 million dollars to food for friends. Every year Stop & Shop has its triple winner game to raise funds for the Stop & SHop pediatric Brain tumor clinic at Dana Farber. If you have a cause that you are trying to raise money for you can sign up for cash for causes program. You buy gift cards for 5% off face value and get your supporters to pay face value and do their shopping with gift cards The cause pockets the 5%. So I think you might be understating how much Stop & Shop does for Portsmouth.

Right on, SP! Clements is a Portsmouth gem, and the Clement family demonstrate a level of citizenship that those (internationally owned) chains would never even imagine.
I think every abandoned gas station would make a good little bakery.
