What kind of business do you think should go here?

While some businesses in Portsmouth have been around for "as long as you can remember," some have closed their doors, either due to poor economic times or simply moving to a new location.

There's also plenty of land for sale in town, including this empty lot on Chase Road near the U.S. Post Office.

We want to know what businesses you think would thrive in that location. What type of business would you like to inhabit this land? Or, would you like to see the land put to other use?

Ha HA HA that would be great! But I think we will have the group out protesting yet again. But Portsmouth needs something to liven it up

Why does there always seem be need to build something on an empty lot/land? Maybe some developer has spotted it & sees $$ signs in his eyes because he will be the only one putting that $$ in his pocket. I say leave it alone & let it stay as an open space.

Because we need to expand the commercial and industrial tax base to take some of the burden off the residential tax payer. If we don't start bringing in some new sources of revinue we will tax the homeowners out of town.

I certainly agree with industrial expansion of the tax base. But unfortunately the only tax base that gets increased is based on the building of more houses & condos which actually increases property taxes. The ALT has proven that. So now any business that wants to come here will be stuck paying that rate.

I see the hardware store closed it's doors. The Big Box Stores are the only ones that survive around here. It's all about volume and profit. With out that you have vacancy .

We need a Trader Joe's on the Island - there are plenty of good sites - Clock Tower Square, for example - that would be suitable.

I'd like to see a Whole Foods open up. Trader Joe's is good, but Whole Foods is much better.

Before we build anything, has anyone noticed that the Valero station, a few hundred yards away, has already lost a coffee shop and a pizza place that are now closed. There is a 40% off sale on most remaining merchandise and the shelves are nearly empty. A cause for concern. It is eerily similar to my experience at Handrens.
