Facebook Users Share Well-Wishes for Former Portsmouth Educator

A campaign recently started on Facebook for a Portsmouth educator.

A Facebook campaign to support a retired Portsmouth educator is gaining ground.

Jan Persson Williams posted the following Facebook status Monday:

PORTSMOUTH HIGH SCHOOL - Our dear friend Mr. Fitz is facing a serious health issue and will be undergoing difficult treatment. It would be wonderful if we could send cards and notes to let him know how much he means to us and to wish him well. If you could pass this along to your friends, maybe we can pay him back for some of his thousands of kind words and deeds. Send to: Col. Edward Fitzgerald, USMC Ret., 62 Belmont Dr., Portsmouth, RI 02871. Please share.

The original posting inspired 106 shares as of Tuesday at 11:34 a.m. The original posting can be found here

Dear Mr. Fitz,
I know that you are going through some tough times and I just wanted to wish you a healthy and speedy recovery! I was on the Portsmouth tennis team for four years and I can remember all of the support you gave us girls. In fact, I still have that angel pin you gave each of us :) I also remember that when my grandpa, Jerome Callaghan, was sick you wrote me the most heartfelt letter. I wanted to let you know how much I have appreciated everything that you have done. You have truly left a mark on the Portsmouth community and are loved by so many. I know you are strong and can get through this! Best of luck!
Love,
Brittany Anthony

After conversing with others about our many interactions with Mr. Fitz, it is apparent that he has truly left his mark on many of our lives and hearts.

I am looking to compile a collection of personal moments/stories with Mr. Fitz, those had by alumni, staff and friends alike. That moment where you knew you had met someone beyond ordinary. Whether it be the first stick of Juicy Fruit he offered you while changing classes, or the moment he made your dream of going to college a reality... no matter how big, or how small that moment may seem.... He needs to hear about it! Mr. Fitz has touched so many of our lives in a positive and compassionate manner... he is the type of person you do not find more than once in a lifetime. The goal is to compile these messages and any photos you want to share into a "book". These "Fitz Moments" should be e-mailed to phslovesmrfitz@yahoo.com

This project will be most successful if these memories are typed and edited into the email address posted, allowing for a quick copy and paste into the design of the book. Entries can remain anonymous, just please note that you want to keep your message anonymous at the conclusion of your e-mail. I am trying to keep the actual "creation" of the book and it's title in the hands of fellow alumni, however if you are able to assist in this project please feel free to e-mail. DEADLINE for RECEIPT of your MESSAGE... February 14th, 2013! Thank you, and in the spirit of Mr. Fitz... make someone smile today:)

Mr. Fitz, You are at the top of my family's prayer list, for strength and healing. You always lifted me up to feel like I was important. So many other PHS students feel the same way, because you made it your job (after you were done at the gum factory) to make a difference in our lives. I still read the notes you wrote me when I feel down. Love, Maddie Paolero. PS - My brother AJ appreciated your pats on the back, too, will be looking out for your return to PHS.
