"Crews arrived to find a 78-year-old female heavily trapped in the front seat of sedan that had struck a box truck head-on. The patient was receiving care from bystanders and a Portsmouth police officer."

Portsmouth Rescue crews used hydraulic tools to access the patient and lift the dashboard off of the victim. The dashboard was lifted in 12 minutes, O'Brien wrote.

The elderly woman was transported by ambulance to Newport Hospital for treatment of "multiple, severe injuries," according to O'Brien.

The truck driver was also treated for minor injuries, police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The identities of the drivers are unknown at this time.
