Many Facebook users changed their profile picture today to a pink equal sign with a red background in support of same-sex marriage.

The social media change comes as the U.S. Supreme Court takes up Proposition 8, California’s gay marriage ban. 

In 2008, Californian residents voted in support of Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage and reversed a state Supreme Court's decision in support of marriage equality. 

Many Rhode Islanders are watching the arguments closely as the Ocean State considers joining other New England states in legalizing gay marriage. State legislation in support for same-sex marriage has already passed in the House.
