Cove 'Escape' Bridge Construction Postponed Until 2012

Hurricane concerns prompt the state Department of Transportation to postpone construction until January 2012.

Construction on the Cove "Escape" Bridge has now been postponed until January 2012, according to Town Administrator Robert Driscoll.

Residents and council members previously expressed concern about the bridge being closed during hurricane season, which runs through November.

"The DOT has listened to the concerns," Driscoll said at Tuesday's council meeting.

Construction will now begin "just after the New Year" in 2012, Driscoll said.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) is planning to tear down the Cove Bridge, also known as the Escape Bridge, and construct a new bridge in its place.

The bridge will be closed to traffic during the entire time of construction, which is expected to take up to six months. The bridge, which is located on Point Road, is an access road for the neighborhood of Island Park.
