Couple Extricated From Vehicle After Rollover Crash [VIDEO]
A total of three people were transported by ambulance following a motor vehicle crash Saturday morning at the intersection of West Main Road and Union Street.
Three people were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital Saturday morning following a rollover crash on West Main Road at Union Street.
A silver, Toyota RAV4 landed on its driver's side around 11:08 a.m. at the corner of West Main Road and Redwood Road, just across from Union Street.
Gathering on the corner, neighbors watched as residents quickly came to the aid of the victims.
Before emergency crews arrived, at least a half dozen people could be seen directing traffic at the busy intersection, as well as standing on top and around the rolled-over van, talking to the two adult victims trapped inside.
Police and Rescue personnel arrived a short time later, directing traffic and quickly working to extricate the two victims.
A man and woman were extricated from the vehicle and taken on stretcher to a Tiverton Rescue ambulance. The couple was then transported to Newport Hospital, according to Capt. Michael O'Brien of the Portsmouth Fire Department.
A woman in a second vehicle was also transported by ambulance to Newport Hospital. All of the injuries appear to be "non-life threatening," O'Brien wrote in an e-mail after the crash.
The silver van was towed from the scene. Further details about the crash are unavailable at this time.
Traffic was temporarily backed up along West Main Road during the response.
Just prior to the crash, at 10:56 a.m., Portsmouth fire crews also responded to a report of smoke at the Bay View apartments. The smoke was caused by a resident cleaning their oven.
Since Portsmouth fire crews were at Bay View Estates, additional mutual aid was called to the crash.
Along with Portsmouth Engine 3, responding to the crash were personnel from the Newport Naval Station, Tiverton and Middletown Fire Departments.

What's going on with this intersection? Just a couple of weeks ago there was another rollover accident. It seems that there a some serious accidents in this location. Is it due to the offset intersection with Cory's Lane? Has the traffic light synchronization been investigated? It is an inherently dangerous intersection, so maybe DOT can look into how to increase it's safety.

People need to learn to wait and look both ways before just pulling out. I can't tell you how many times I could've been hit from someone going through all kinds of lights. We all have to watch our backs all the time!
