Council Approves Variance for New Building at Brewers Sakonnet Marina
The Portsmouth Town Council approved an eight feet variance for the new marina building.
The Portsmouth Town Council approved an eight-feet variance Monday night for a new building at the Brewers Sakonnet Marina.
The vote was unanimous.
Brewers Sakonnet Marina is planning to construct a new 9,600 sq. ft. building to house its offices and boat storage facilities. The existing building, which houses the present offices, will be demolished.
The company has received a permit from the Portsmouth Zoning Board of Review, but a variance is needed to permit the offices and bathrooms to remain on the same first floor as the boat storage.
Most of the new building will be devoted to boat storage. However, a northern 30-foot-section will house offices and bathrooms.
The request was to make access to the building more convenient for patrons, according to the site manager. Without the variance, an elevator would be required for handicapped access.
A variance is being sought to construct this northern section at eight feet above Mean Sea Level. Buildings in V-16 Zones require bathrooms and offices to be constructed at least 16' above Mean Sea Level.
The development site has no history of flooding, according to the site manager.
The structure still requires approval by the Rhode Island Coastal Management Council.

This marina dredged a quiet tital basin filed with birds and fish when it was built in the 1960's bringing with it too much noise, traffic and too many arogant outsiders driving too fast and caring nothing of our neighborhood that they race through to get to their big boats. They are BAD neighbors, why give them more?

Six years ago our Shannon was docked at Brewers. My 13 year old son and I drove from Michigan to spend the summer there on our boat. It was the best summer of our lives. We made friends who live on Common Fence Point. Each day I bought coffee and a newspaper at the corner store. We bought all our vegetables at the farmers market on Anthony RD several times weekly and bought clams at the shack. We joined the Herreshoff museum and my son attended their wonderful sailing camp. The crew at Brewers were outstanding in their hospitality and service making sure our home away from home was just that; home. The marina was spotless. Everyone was so neighborly. I'm sorry to hear of people who don't respect the laws of Common Fence Point. I appreciated and respected the 15 mph speed limit. And I pray nobody thought me to be offensive. We were truly blessed to be able to enjoy such an uncommon place as Common Fence Point.
