Cicilline, Langevin, Whitehouse win Re-Election

Rhode Island voters favor Democrats in election.

It was a good night for Democrats Tuesday in Rhode Island.

In Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District David Cicilline was able to win a second term against a tough race fought against Republican Brendan Doherty. The former head of the Rhode Island State Police strongly criticized Cicilline during the course of the campaign over his final leadership of the city of Providence when he was mayor for eight before heading to Washington two years ago.

In the 2nd Congressional District James Langevin was able to win a seventh term over Republican Michael Riley. Riley reportedly lent his campaign more than $600,000. Langevin cited as accomplishments his work to maintain submarine production at Electric Boat and efforts to strengthen job training and cyber security.

Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse was projected winner in the Rhode Island Senate race on Tuesday night with 97% of the precincts reporting. Whitehouse wins a second term with his projected victory. Whitehouse defeated GOP challenger Barry Hinckley with over 55% of the votes.

Insanity - a deranged state of the mind usually occurring as a specific disorder; such unsoundness of mind or lack of understanding as prevents one from having the mental capacity required by law to enter into a particular relationship, status, or transaction or as removes one from criminal or civil responsibility; extreme folly or unreasonableness; something utterly foolish or unreasonable.
For those people who voted for Cicilline just gave him legitimacy and accepted his lame apologies for looting the City of Providence. You were hoodwinked by the scare tactics these people have perpetrated on you.
You had a clear choice between good and evil - casting aside a former State Police Superintendent for a career politician who has given you NOTHING in return just illustrates the insanity of the people voting patterns in this state.
Anyone who walks around with the big “D” on their chest and a donkey tail on their butt is guaranteed a life in politics in RI, regardless of your background or character. You can have people with convictions running as democrats and unseat honest people that are trying to turn this state around. (cont.)

Rhode Island has been and will continue to be a corrupt little state until the people regain their sanity and see what is being done to them. The tax and spend party is turning this state into a nanny state and forcing people to be dependent on it. With the re-election of this President, you will see major changes in the healthcare system going forward.- your government will determine your healthcare, not your doctor! You have believed their lies and now you will see the results. Medicare as you know it will be changed for the worse and seniors will experience it. “Oh? But the Democrats said they would protect it. Guess what? They lied to you.”
Your currency continues to be devalued, we will be seeing inflation around the corner and jobs will continue to be a myth. RI is a bedroom community to Boston and you can thank the tax and spend party for that AND they thank you for your vote! Fools!

It amazes me that someone like Sheldon Whitehouse, when as our Atty General refused to uphold court orders when it came to chasing down child support with the lame excuse"he's making an attempt"even though in violation of multiple court orders, can now "make laws"?? for our protection--and the jokers go on in litlle Rhody.

Rhode Islanders don't know how to vote for individuals, they only look at the party symbol, which is a very unhealthy outlook on voting. Our state will only improve when people start to care about the actual integrity of the candidates.

Fantastic and very true post about Rhode Islanders. That is why this state is in such a mess and is at the bottom 3 for business development now and top three for unemployment. This is a state that eats itself alive, while everyone keeps voting in the people, just because they wear a Democrat button, that make this state sink lower and lower. Leaving in 2 years for a much better run state with people in the state who actually vote for the candidates platforms, principals, morals, integrity and positive direction they want the state to go in...not the Democrat button they wear on their shirt. We won't even look back now as we hightail it out of here.

Look no further then right here in our own political arena The people once again Voted for a new Mayor not a appointed puppet that the council let stand as our city Mayor that is listening to the citizens Please we deserve much better. This council is what i call a cronnie group that no longer listen's to the citizens on the direction's the city should be headed. What ever happened to "Engage Newport" plans? For a city that should be waatching the budget the new city Manager seems to be on a spendimg spree with now the appointment of a new planing director I wonder if she will hire another out of state person help dictate the direction of Newport's future? I see the Mayor and City manager are hell bent on selling out our visitor's center instead of building a new parking garage next to the city parking garage we all ready have nowe seems like the fix is in?

This election once again illustrates why nothing ever improves in RI and never will.

There are many reasons for the ongoing death spiral. Mike has hit upon one of those reasons in a general sense. But the larger issue goes to the poorly educated population in RI. By that I mean that they are uninformed or do not care to be informed on issues that directly contribute to the strangulation of the state.

We have approximately 50% of the population receiving $ from the government in one form or another. Elections are a case study in classic Pavlovian behavior. I (the pol) give you $ and in turn you see me as a source which cannot be disturbed or terminated. As the provider, I plant the change/loss issue of your goody bag in your mind. Once that is ingrained it's easy to demonize anything that becomes a threat to me the provider and I control you and your vote. Then it is extrapolated to a group, then to a general population.
I believe that we have exceeded the tipping point in this mind game. The guiding principles this country was built upon have successfully been eroded over a period of the last 50 years beginning with the "Great Society" of LBJ. We are now in the throes of the Saul Alinsky presidency. If this were a chess game it would be analogous to a few moves before checkmate. I believe it was Patton who said "We have met the enemy and the enemy is us". How true.

Actually, that would be the comic strip character Pogo who said that. But I agree that an unintentional (?) consequence of The Great Society was a public that demands services and support like they are basic rights. And those that know how to provide for themselves are now demonized and turned into a soure of funding for the same group of people that made poor life chices when they were young.

Dear potential candidate in RI, Our great little state has a few requirements before you can run for any office. 1. Lie to us about the financial condition of our cities and towns. We will forgive you only if you offer free pasta dinners to our grandparents and continue to tell us we are a business friendly state without any proof. 2. Rob our constituents through insider trading. We beg that you tell us that it’s okay and tell us you are not Martha Stewart so you are held to a different standard with different laws. We are all aware we are held to that same standard and Martha is part of that evil 1%. 3. Most important as a state we beg that all continue to be strictly blue or red because complacency, naiveté, ignorance, arrogance and haphazardness have been beneficial, profitable and really everyone, look our state, it’s in great shape. Why would we not vote them all back in they are with out error so far, right? Do we get a first place plastic trophy for being last? After all, last place is the first place loser and we deserve it because we all worked so hard to get here never mind that it’s just equal and fair.

Heads up Rhode Island citizens. Enough with raising taxes --- reduce cost. If progressives tax the “rich” and “middle class” in an unfair manor, they will leave the state, which in turn will lower the tax revenue generated. “In the end it comes back to us” and everyone in the state will have to pay even higher taxes. The progressive answer is always to raise taxes until they run out of OUR money. How about make government smaller and more efficient, which will reduce costs. Progressives are for higher taxes and more government and are not pro-liberty that is for sure. Introducing and sponsoring 88 bills in 2012 is not synonomous with liberty or efficient government. Teresa Tanzi is just an example and is the sponser on the bills below.

“Surcharges” imposed if the governor signs this bill into law

If you make over 26,575 your personal income tax may go up if the governor signs this bill onto law “Over $26,575 but not over $64,250 $996.56 plus 7.00% of the excess over $26,575” and so on……..

This election was just another example of why RI is a place to leave. It is a story that has been repeated here for as long as I can remember. The players change but the results are the same. No amount of wishing or hoping or wanting to make things better will accomplish what has been for a longtime the impossible.

RI is an example of evil triumphing over good. Regardless of the sad state of affairs the people have spoken and we are now left to deal with the results.
I don't even think God can help us anymore. God's probably too busy with issues that hold some hope and promise. It is truly a shame to watch the demise of our state and country. History will mark November 6, 2012 as the fork in the road when we chose the path of final destruction for the greatest experiment in history. Just as all previous democracies imploded we are doing the same, funny how history repeats itself. I just never thought that I would live to see it.

My heart goes out to all those young faces we see at the soccer fields, the schools, our neighborhoods. All of us, the adults, have failed them. We have failed because we have ignored the problems and taken the feel good way out.

Ask yourself do you truly feel good?

Very sad to see the rhetoric and what's going on here. When one side wins, the other blames it for being idiotic. It feels like 90% of the country thinks the "other" 90% is unintelligent. Nobody will have to attack us to destroy us. We are doing that pretty well on our own. It's not our policies that will destroy us. It is this constant bickering, fatalism, and intolerance.

If only that were true... At least then, you could understand the mentality. I think the majority of RI voters don't ask any questions. They just go in and vote for the name (or the letter) that they recognize. At the last election, I was behind a pair of women. One of them looks at the sample ballot and says, "Who are all these other people running for President. I thought there were only two candidates." After a brief pause, she follows up with, "Oh, it doesn't matter anyway. I'm voting all Democrat." All you need to win is name recognition by a block (usually, the unions). They tell the rest of the people who to vote for and, with few exceptions, that's who the people elect.

All you need to understand the mentality is to simply recognize that people think differently and people that like demand side economics don't like supply side economics. I don't receive anything from the government. Bill Gates doesn't receive anything from the government. The Hollywood people we all make fun of don't receive anything from the government. Most of my friends don't receive anything from the government. We all voted democrat because we believe in the cause. I scratch my head when people label me "taker". We did not buy into what Romney was saying. Are we stupid? Are we driving this country to its collapse? I venture to say that it is extremism that is going to do us in. Not our policies. The country would have survived either president. It will not survive the sad state of affairs.

Portsman...I understand that you vote for what you think is the best method of governing. What I don't understand is how you can still have faith in that method when year after year you see the results. It just isn't working. Maybe not right away, but eventually the people who will get hurt the most will be the lowest income people. The rich will always be fine no matter what happens. It is the poor who will pay the price when we run out of other people's money.

Romney said when asked about his Cayman Isle accounts: "Bain would get investors to invest through the Cayman Isle account so as not to have to pay US income tax."
That is a direct quote. What does that tell you about this man as a candidate for President.
Tax avoidance advice is not exactly a way to build up the economy.
Society is responsible for its own delinquency. In this case, it was right.

Just for the record, had you been following me on Facebook or Twitter, you would have had the winners in all races but 2 a week before the election and the 69-6 General Assembly result back in August. (That was in a letter to former, God that feels so good to say, Rep. Ehrhardt which was posted on Tumblr at the time and is up at QuahogsUnitedBlog.org in, you guessed it, another Blog.)

These things called elections work very simply. Why are some of you trying to complicate them??

I have a small business and I have concluded that there is no choice but to quit and go elsewhere. It is not an issue of Dem or Rep but an issue of right vs. wrong. It is no longer worth the effort to fight a losing battle to try and survive. There are other states in this country where an honest effort is appreciated and self reliance is applauded.

RI has much potential but that potential is thwarted by the shortsighted and selfish mentality of this state.

@perchance--you are correct flight is the best choice, it is the only choice.

I was enlightened a couple of years ago, before I retired from the military, when at an out of state carwash an older gentleman (maybe late 50's or early 60's) saw my RI war vet plate and mentioned he was from RI. He was a mid manager in one of the local bank chains, maybe Fleet or Citizens. He said he moved because.."you can't afford to live there, and you can't afford to retire there"..he then ranted on for a few minutes about who, what, how stuff is taxed yadda yadda. My take away was watch out where you move. Some states have crazy fees like FL's fee to register cars and certain sales taxes. Sometimes MSN has a calculator that helps for certain retirement reasons (health longevity, taxes, whatever). I've got my pick after a long consideration and job offer for my wife, however, at some point in the near future the time will come to say bye to coffee milk, Dels, and Olneyville weiners. Good luck. Search carefully.

observer, Some business owners have invested their live savings into buildings and equipment. They would loose their investment if they tried to move. Those owners face insolvency. They have no chose but to stay and fight for their livelihood . The Legislature has yet to learn that a small State like ours can't just raise taxes every time they need more money. People will shop where it's the cheapest. On line sales are booming. When the State hits the bottom and the bills go unpaid a new understanding will come to pass. The people who retired with State pensions and those who rely on social programs will take a big hit. It's to bad we can't work together to solve our States problems.

If some bloggers sent as much time crystalizing the issues and articulating the solutions as they envision them for their candidates and spent less time in insults and hate mongering calling everyone fools, their political views might be embraced and their candidates given a fairer chance of getting elected.
The conservatives, for example, never articulated what they would cut, how they would cut it, and what results it would have on all ecomomic classes. They talked in platitudes so general that many did not believed their sincerety.
Try logic, sometimes it works.

The easiest way to make cuts is to reverse the process - last law enacted would be the first one cut for any govt program. The unions use this process, called senority, for running their operations, why not just wind the clock back and cut the programs accordingly? The govt. can't keep up funding this candy store.
