Portsmouth Officer Shoots, Euthanizes 'Possum
An opossum, believed to be rabid, was discovered last week in Island Park.
Police say an opossum, found in front of Travers Plumbing in Island Park last week, was rabid.
The opossum was discovered Wednesday morning in Island Park. An officer shot the opossum with a shotgun to euthanize it, according to The Sakonnet Times.
"The opossum showed signs of being rabid," said Lt. Brian Peters. "It was then euthanized."
The deceased animal was later transported to the Potter League in Middletown.

Travers Plumbing is not in Island Park it is in Portsmouth Park. Island park does not start until the bottom of the hill where the sea wall starts.

We live in Portsmouth Park too. This possum was likely in our back yard a few weeks ago. It had urinated in multiple places along the fence and then got in a loud, mortal combat with another possum. I found wads of fur along the brick wall the next morning. Their tracks went all around our yard, under our deck, and into all the surrounding neighbors' yards. I think he was a big bully but was hoping to see him again. He really entertained our (indoor) cats.

Tamori its news because its a spreadable and potentially deadly disease that can be spread from animals to humans through a simple bite.
Bruce..only 10 in 150yrs in the entire United States? It is actually QUITE a bit more than that but the percentage is low for opposums.
from the CDC:opossums are extremely rare carriers of rabies. In fact, because of their low body temperature (94-97 degrees F), it is believed that the rabies virus cannot survive and replicate in the opossum. They also appear to be immune or resistant to typical domestic animal diseases of the dog and cat, such as distemper, parvo virus, and feline hepatitis.

That number is generated by the CDC. AND YES the body temperature has a lot to do with that. They put on a big hissing noisy show and are unfortunatley very misunderstood. Really? Showed signs of being rabid???? Why because it was scared cornered and hissing? Too bad.
