Bob Hamilton, 72, a regular at the annual swim, is happy to embark this year into the icy Sakonnet waters with "no broken bones." At last year's swim, a determined Hamilton had to be carried in and out of the freezing water by fellow island Park Seals Rob Hill and Chris Freitas due to a broken ankle. He even managed a back flip before it was all over.

Portsmouth “Polar Plunge”
Volunteers Needed
The Portsmouth 375th Anniversary Committee plans to begin the celebratory year, 2013, with “375” hearty souls jumping into the Sakonnet River on January 1st. This is planned to be a fund raising effort to help celebrate, throughout 2013, the signing of the Portsmouth Compact in 1638.
