Boy Scout Troop 82 Awards Eagle Scout Rank
Sawyer Nichols, 16, of Boy Scout Troop 82, sponsored by Saint Mary's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor held on February 19, 2012 at the Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth.
Sawyer is the son of George and Diane Nichols of Portsmouth. He has been active in Scouting for the last 10 years and joins the rank of Eagle Scout along with his paternal Grandfather.
To earn Eagle, a Scout must bring all he has learned together and lead others to complete a service project benefitting a church, school or community. Sawyer’s Eagle project was the restoration of the Sandy Point Beach restrooms and enhancing the beach entrance by installing a flowerbed with trees and flowers. Funds & materials for the project were donated by Sandy Point Ave residents, Decastro Farms and Rhode Island Nurseries.
Within Boy Scouts, Sawyer has served as the Troop’s Senior Patrol leader, Quartermaster and Order of the Arrow Representative. He is currently a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, Boy Scouts of America’s honor society.
A sophomore at Portsmouth High School, Sawyer also plays the alto saxophone as a member of the Portsmouth High School marching band.
