Boy Scout Troop 82 Announces Newest Eagle Scout

Steven Vierkant, 18, of Boy Scout Troop 82, sponsored by Saint Mary's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor held on Sunday, December 9th, 2012 at Green Valley Country Club.

Steven is the son of Nicole Gotovich of Portsmouth. Active in Scouting for the last 10 years, Steven is the first person in his family to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

To earn the rank of Eagle, a Scout must bring all he has learned together and lead others to complete a service project benefitting a church, school or community.  Steven's Eagle service project was to build & install bat houses at the Melville Pond Recreation Area in Portsmouth. The addition of these bat houses helps significantly reduce the amount of insects in the local environment. Steven was able to complete his project with help from fellow Boy Scouts, his project mentor Cynthia Mellow-Wolz and materials donated by Home Depot, One Stop Building Supply, Mid City Steel, Humphreys and Assistant Scout Master Ray Perry.

Within Boy Scouts, Steven has served as a patrol leader several times throughout the years.  He was also elected to the Order of the Arrow, Boy Scouts of America’s honor society.

A senior at Portsmouth High School, Steven is also a member of the PHS Ice Hockey team.
