Knights of Columbus Crown 2013 Free Throw Champions
Five boys and girls from Aquidneck Island, ages 10 to 13, were named local champions of the 2013 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. These worthy champions have earned an invitation to compete at the state level. Father Christopher S. Rooney Council 3618 in Portsmouth sponsored the local competition. All island youngsters ages 10 to 14 were eligible to participate.
Stephanie Soler of Portsmouth was the 12-year-old girls champion and winner of the URI Rams Women’s
team signed basketball. The boys’ twelve-year-old
champion was Austin Gibbs from Newport. Austin won the URI Rams Men’s team signed basketball for making all 15
of his free throw attemps. For the 10-year-old division, the boys winner was Jarlyn Soler of Portsmouth. His brother Alex Soler, last years overall winner and state champ, was the 13-year-old division winner. The 11-year-old boys division was won by Andrew Hanlon of Middletown. Also participating and making an impressive 11 of 15 free throws was 12-year-old Liam Callahan of Portsmouth The Council 3618 winners will compete in the state competition to be held on March 17th at Bishop Hendricken High School.
